Can a cisgendered actor play a trans character?

Something I was wondering, how many openly trans actors actually are there. And how many of those would suit the part, be the best option and be available/want to do it.

So many variables...

Most trans people would be rubish playing a role of a person transitioning.

Mainly because its kinda hard to undo all the work to make them look pre op again :p

Easier to take a cis guy snd add prostetics and make up as needed

Depends what parts they show I guess...:p

I dunno, the closest trans person to me did a good job of going back to looking like a guy when visiting his parents, before switching back to different makeup, hair and clothes to go back to everyday life. Ops aren't everything.

Eddie Murphy played a white guy in Coming to America. There was no uproar.

Eddie Murphy played everyone in Coming To America :)

Leave the transgender roles to masses of transgender actors who must all be queuing around the block for the auditions. Im sure the directors will have plenty of talented actors to choose from and big names to sell tickets.

how would these trans people feel about this movie?

Grope slowly round the bottom?

What if the story is about someone going through the process? Is the 'correct' choice of actor determined by whichever state wins out on screen time?

Maybe they could hire an actor for each state and just CGI them into one person, everyones happy, job done.

Mr Sulu is gay...

No he isn't. The reimagined Mr Sulu is gay, much to George's annoyance. He stated Roddenbury never made Sulu gay. If they wanted to make a characetr gay, it would more fitting to make another character gay, it would mean something outside of the standard demographic, something more than a tribute to the original actor.

Im not sure when this went from being classed as a mental illness to as "normal" as changing your clothes.

All too recently, and still only in very few places. Being diagnosed with a mental disorder has huge ramifications on the people involved, particularly in places like the States.

Maybe the transgender actors are rubbish and didn't get it because of lack of talent?

You shouldn't get a role simply because of who or what you are surely as that goes against the whole issue of discrimination and transgender people doesn't it?

In actual fact the article in a way supports the differences but until a transgender person plays a non-transgender person we'll always get this. A transgender has never played a non-transgender person have they taking away from non-transgender actors?
