BBC license fee proposals...

Oh tuner doesnt matter to me the guy was asking.

They would then need the name of your friend and theyd check thier license.

I have no idea how much money they would spend prosecuting but they might be able to xheck which device was used.

They may ask for all of these things but there is no legal requirement for users to secure their networks or know who uses them. I don't use iPlayer or watch any kind of TV myself but if a friend happens to sign in to my wireless with their phone/laptop when they visit and watch something it is no skin off my back and you'd have to be pretty paranoid to worry about it.

It's simple, don't watch live TV or the iPlayer, ignore the knocks at the door, which are about once a year, and ignore all the letters.

Without a name, they can't do anything anyway. They rely on YOU giving THEM information, just ignore them and get on with your lives. :D

Its not always that simple.

You'll have to explain yourself because this is the best tried and tested way of dealing with the TVL/BBC.
Earlier on this year I was getting more than 1 letter a month and more than 1 TV inspector a year on my property. At one point it was weekly and the constant stalking around my property and weekly threats was causing my wife stress. There is more to it than that but I don’t want to go into detail on a public forum. Just ignoring them though wasn’t a solution.

For years I had no problem with the TV licence people but in the past year or two they have been overly aggressive. Which is uncalled for considering I used to let them in my house. I don't anymore due to this years events. They know I don't even own a TV but that hasn't stopped them getting more pushy.

They start off aggressive, but after a few months they give up.

Just let them come round and send the letters .. all their doing is wasting their time and money! I've been ignoring them for years! Who'd they take to court anyway, Mr J DOE! :D

May I suggest in CCTV covering your front door so you can vett who's at the door! ;)

10 years ago it was waaaay more sneaky, they'd send recorded delivery letters addressed to Legal Occupier to get you to sign for the letter so they could get your name.

They'd also use the electoral roll to get a name, then use the phone book to get a phone number then they'd phone you up pretending to be a survey company, few minutes off fluff, then they'd start on "How often do you watch the BBC?" ... all pretty obvious TVL!

Just ignore them and don't cause them any trouble/antagonise them .... the Sunday morning TVL/Police visits although rare as hens teeth, they save for trouble makers.

I've always just told them I don't need a license via their website and never heard anything more. I think people makes things complicated by being difficult for no reason.
That is complete rubbish and I hate it when people say that. I did not make things complicated by being difficult for no reason. Its the TV licence people who are at fault not me. I was like you I told them I didn't need a licence and had no problem for around 5 years but after 5 years they wouldn't listen.

But they are not just wasting their time and money. They are causing stress by stalking my home and its been going on for more then a year. Though I agree on your CCTV suggestion one has been installed due to all the problems and they seem to have backed off since.

One thing that is confusing me at the moment is how it works with a lodger. Say I give my lodger access to broadband, I have no real way of knowing what they are doing, even if I've asked them to avoid using iPlayer.

I only watch Netflix/Prime or BluRays but I can't exactly monitor a lodger 24/7?

My TV in the living room can't receive live broadcasts as I don't have a cable/satellite box or an antenna and I've removed the iPlayer app so that's me covered.

Don't over think it, if they knock on your door just shut it in their face. If they cause aggro get their I.d.

They can't get you with out you giving them the evidence.

That's their only weapon, in an internal memo a few years back they admitted the purpose of TVL was to make peoples lives as uncomfortable as possible and intimidate people to cause them to buy a licence whether they need one or not.

Another thing to point out, banning them from your property by removing their Implied Rights of Access will flag you as a trouble maker and they'll not like this at all and you can expect a Sunday morning TVL/Police visit (possibly, they're very rare).

Also they HATE being filmed and stuck on YouTube, this will also flag you as a trouble maker as they have to report it EVERY time their filmed.

Like I said, just forget about them, ignore them, and get on with your lives.

Set you BB box to block the iPlayer website?

I don't pay tv license as I don't watch tv, I get the letters every so often without my name so I just bin them. Once also someone came knocking the door, he asked me to give my name and I told him I didn't know how he was I that I don't watch tv and that I am not giving him any details.

I once went to court though (14 years ago) as I gave some details at the door few months before and signed something and then guess what happened, they filed the empty spaces that I watched and recorded live tv etc and they had my signature on it. I basically got set up. Went to court and was not guilty at the end as I actually still had a valid tv license for another 5 days or so from my previous address.

Lesson learned, if you sign anything then cross all empty fields or fill them with "no" or "do not apply" or something that you actually cannot get done for.

That's my story when it comes to tv licensing.

Aren't you by law now responsible for what is downloaded on your connection? I'm sure something like that came in to being to stop people using the above argument of "my wifi was insecure/open, it could be anyone".

Edit: appears that may not actually be the case.
