Franchise where the third film is the best one.

in general the 2nd film is usually always the best of the series (with a couple of exceptions)...heres some evidence :D

Superman 2
Empires Strikes Back
Godfather 2
Aliens
The Dark Knight (only just edges out the first)
Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan
Spiderman 2
Terminator 2
Mad Max 2
Captain America Winter Soldier
LOTR: The Two Towers
Rocky 2
Beverly Hills Cop 2
Evil Dead 2

All better than the 1st and indeed best of entire series i daresay. Theres something about being the 2nd film that adds a certain je ne sais quo.

A few exceptions stuff like Raiders of the Lost Ark (1st one stands alone), Ghostbusters, The Matrix, Highlander, Die Hard but you get my drift.

dems the unwritten laws of film making.

I can only name the few that have already been brought up -

The Good, the Bad & the Ugly
Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade

and *maybe* these for my own tastes -

Lethal Weapon 3 (felt the most "natural" of them)
Karate Kid 3 (1st is a classic but 3 is a better film)
American Pie 3 (granny in the airing cupboard - instawin!!!)
Superman 3 (best story, Supes going rogue etc)

Indiana Jones and the last crusade?

I watched all three Indiana Jones films (yes, all three) over three days just recently. The first is so much better than either of the other two. It is absolutely amazing. Last Crusade is good, sure, but it is nothing close to Raiders.

Bourne? I get confused between all of them but since the most recent one came out I heard lots of talk that Ultimatum was the best of the series? Is it the one with the window jump?

What? You forgot to watch 'Crystal Skull', shame, shaaame :D

Last Crusade has Alison Doody, Ark has Karen Allen, Crusade wins :p

Yep. You could be onto something here, as you the time you get to ultimatum he's really got the fighting down. Watching identity is a bit painful these days, as there's bits where the fights are really obviously sped up.

I agree entirely except Aliens, you couldn't give me enough money to ever say Aliens was better than Alien.

Actually I lie, you also mentioned T2 which is Terminator for the kids ;)

1st film - Testing the water

2nd film - It worked and we've made something better

3rd film - Money grabbing off a franchise

Agree on calling out Aliens and T2

Would also argue strongly against Rocky 2 (it's the 2nd best, sure, but nowhere near as good as the first)

On personal taste, I reckon Godfather 1 is better - it's common to say 2 is superior, but I prefer the first.

And I like the first LotR best - possibly because I watched it over and over a lot when it was first out on DVD. Never understood the love for the third one either.

Last crusade is the only best 3rd film.

Anyone that says fellowship of the ring isn't the best... Tbh their opinion on anything else is dubious.

Terminator 2 is far superior to Terminator in every way. But I'll allow personal preference in that instance.

Aliens is waay better theres only so many times you can take semi seriously a rubber suited man being scary.

Besides how many times can you watch the complete idiocy of Lambert (and Dallas) again and again? Shouting at them does bugger all.

Whereas in aliens i can watch this **** all day and night yo.

Mission imposable 3.

The 3rd film was the start of something good. The first being a decent film, the 2nd rather average, which killed it for a few years till it got a reboot.

I like the series, so In my eyes 4 and 5 only made the series stronger, but the 3rd film is what set it down that path.

I think I would give it to Goldfinger ("No Mr Bond I expect you to die")

[ off-topic - evidently need a corresponding 'remake was better than the original thread' or maybe not ]

I know it isn't a popular opinion, but I honestly think Dark Knight Rises is the best of the trilogy.

Also, Austin Powers: Goldmember is by far the best imo.
