Little confused about DX12

Was not even sure where to post this either!

So I want to buy BF1 but having played the beta my FPS is dipping into the forties and I would like a little more. I have -

Asus Sabertooth 990fx mobo
AMD 8320e CPU (clocked a little)
MSI 290p GPU
8gb RAM
120hz monitor

The setup is very well balanced as it is, with no bottlenecks (I can hit 95% utilization on both the gpu and cpu but never higher).

Now my understanding of DX12 is that it benefits the CPU and I have read it seems that the boosts seen on FX CPU's is really good.

Bearing that in mind, and whether my reading I correct, if one was to see how little they could get away with to achieve a sixty plus FPS, that trying a new GPU would be the first port of call?

If I need to upgrade further I will, cost is not a real issue but at my old age I only really want quite good, rather than the latest. Might go second hand for the other bits if I need then or might even look at Zen when it is out.

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

DX12 has not been implemented into the beta yet fully I believe, I would wait and see how performance is once it's fully implemented and then make decisions

its a beta so will not be fully optimised yet anyway, once the retail is out you may
find its a lot sweeter without any effort from your end.

While beta isn't fully optimised it seems bf1 is very CPU heavy - beyond just feeding the renderer - I don't think DX12 is going to significantly help that aspect though might be wrong.

My Lan PC has a i5 4670k and a 280x. It runs it in high with FPS between 70-90.

When I tried dx12 it was buggy as hell with artifacts everywhere.

Since you have a better GPU I would be looking at that CPU. Maybe clock it a bit more.

It's also worth mentioning that we are not getting full DX12 games yet just tacked on versions meaning we often get poor DX12 implementation & poor performance when compared to the base DX11 games they're added too, That or minimal improvements, Bf1 may buck the trend but I'd be inclined to wait and see after the real release, tweak some settings for now to get it too what you deem acceptable and wait. AMD's FX cpu's are starting to struggle with a lot of new releases in regards to the minimums but Zen's due soon so it's worth waiting for those before doing any cpu upgrade, Intel or AMD.

Wait and see. I believe they might be implementing a Vulkan renderer as well. Also frostbite games tend to be very AMD friendly both CPU and GPU wise. Wait and see

Given they have already had experience with adding in a mantle rendering path I wouldn't be surprised.

I've been playing the beta all settings maxed at 2560x1080 and I've only seen my 290 drop to less than 55 twice.

Resolution scale set to 45%. It does seem very CPU heavy, try clocking the CPU more.

I also believe they will at some point going off this.

DX12 in BF1 isn't fully working correct atm, while I do get higher FPS at the same time frame times can feel abit choppy. This is because the CPU is spiking quite abit. GPU time is excellent mind you..

You can see how you are doing with console command "perfoverlay.drawgraph 1"

I can't see it myself, It's getting DX11 & DX12 why would they offer a third API?

The game runs fine in dx11 on a 3570k and a 780 on ultra drops to 70's on a 64 man server, I don't think its for me this time round though.

£105 for the premium, What do they think we are? Console gamers! :)

Myself and a few others would prefer things to return to the good all days of API choice. I remember when you could choose between DirectX, OpenGL or Glide in games such as Deus Ex.

Not that much, buy game from cdkeys £35 and then premium from Origin £40 Total £75

Premium isn't needed if you not willing to spend the time playing so base game will be enough for most people.

Spent exactly £75 on bf4 don't think I can do it again.

Runs well though and looks nice.

I tried it recently and gave a substantial boost to my minimums with the Fury X. Mins in DX12 = 61; DX11 50fps.

It also uses less VRAM in DX12 vs 11, where I would get some massive lag spikes at times.

It's clear it's not optimized yet, but it's okay for the Fury cards where max memory usage was around 3.6GB with DX12; while DX11 capped me at just a tad under 4GB, with visible FPS hiccups with Ultra settings 1440p.

Just turn the graphics down a bit, i have the same GPU as you and i get 60+ fps on high @ 1080p, have you run afterburner to see if your GPU is throttling?

DX12 is a white pony.

it wont be implemented in many games its a sales tool.

newer version will come out.take it with pinch of salt.

look at up coming titles and you can see its a pointless thing almost.dont buy your gpu based on it.
