Hey peeps,

In the market for a 1070, but I really want it to be as quiet as possible.

Any opinions on this one from EVGA please? Normally I buy MSI, but I've heard so many good things about EVGA's return policy that I'm inclined to give them a go :)

Thanks!

*edit* Noticing a lot of people saying Zotac are good too, would appreciate thoughts :)

*edit edit* D'oh. Just worked out we live in a displayport world now, and I have 3x DVI monitors :( That's going to make things harder than I wanted it to be...

Do what I did to my 970. Which is take off the stock fans and kluge some "silent" 120mm ones on to the stock heatsink. At full blast I can barely hear it now and it's about 10 degrees cooler :D

My palit game rock premium is silent, temps don't go over 65 with the fans at 30% their inaudible.

Noted, thanks :)

Don't really want to do that to a brand new, £400 part though :)

Noise depends on resolution and refresh rate. Someone playing with a 1070 on a crap 60Hz monitor at 1080P might find their card is silent, as it's only using half or less of it's power.

Meanwhile someone else with the same 1070 might be playing in 1440P at 144Hz, the same card will be much louder as it will be maxed out trying to produce 144FPS.

No point listening to people saying their card is 'silent' unless they are specific about settings, as it depends what game they are playing, resolution, refresh rate, case size, etc etc.

I guess that's fair... and tbh, it has occurred to me that I might be overkilling for my 1200p screen :P I keep planning on a new monitor, but the current panel lottery has put me off completely, so maybe I should buy for the screen I have (1060, probably) rather than the screen I'm aiming for ^^; Pretty much all the 1060s seem near silent, what with only being 120 watts...

*edit* My 1070th post :D

:D It was meant to be!

From what I've seen, all reviewers tended to find that all of the larger third party coolers performed virtually identically. Quietest (by about a decibel) has been the MSI Gaming X. Generally, a cooler with 3 slots will be the quietest, followed by a dual large fan design.

As for if a 1070 is overkill, I chose one for 1080p, but I'm at 120Hz so I do gain some benefit from the extra 60 FPS.

Yer, my problem is that I do a lot of colour sensitive work and tend to use professional grade monitors that are stuck at 60Hz. Then again, I'll be happy with 60 if it's nailed to that and never drops. I don't play FPS games, I just want to get rid of the obvious shudder that's creeping in to the ones I do :)

(Again though, maybe that's practical with a 1060... might do some research. No sense dropping the extra £200 if it's wasted at my res and Hz.)

I suspect the 1060 will be plenty (or RX 480 if you go the AMD route)

Cheers :)

Consensus seems to be that EVGA have the best after-sales, but I'm a tad concerned that they only have the single-fan offering. Does not make me feel as confident about it being quiet. I've seen a lot of Zotac love on these forums of late, a bit tempted by their Amp edition... although I've never had problems with Gigabyte hardware either.

Argh! Choices! :(

EVGA definitely are the best with after sales. I too was dubious about the extra fan, but it seems like a very sensible design and I'm tempted to say that the other manufacturers are putting extra fans on for the sake of it. Hexus found it to be the quietest 1060 HERE. Corroborated by Legit reviews HERE.

And on top of that, EVGA have released a new BIOS which turns the fan off at idle, so it should be even quieter!

I've only heard good things about Zotac too with regards to product quality, but they still remain behind in RMA turnaround times. 5 year warranty is nice though :p

Palit Jetsream and gamerock coolers are the quietest of all, and 2.5 slot.

EVGA SC ACX cooler is the quietest 2 slot, and EVGA are meant to have the best warranty/aftersales.

So EVGA SC is probably the best overall choice, but Palit Jetstream/Gamerock if quietness is completely above all else.

Thanks for the charts+info. I do like the dinky size of the EVGA :)

Tbh, it may come down to the Zotac being in stock and the EVGA not... I'd really like to get it before the weekend ^^;

Been many years since I had a Palit card, but I'll take a look, cheers :)

They seem to be out of stock everywhere in the UK :(

If after sales is a concern, then Gigabyte would be my second choice.

(The reason I care about after sales is that I'm an unlucky chap by default :P If there is an item on the shelf with a defect, I will get it :D)

I'm exactly the same! I've only owned 3/10 cards which haven't needed an RMA! My experience is Gigabyte and EVGA are right at the top.

I bought a Palit Super Jetstream last week for my system which is pretty quiet (the noisiest thing by far wa the Zotac GTX 670 in it). Under stress the fans dont go over 45% utilisation and are silent. Out of interest I ramped them up to 72% manually ( the highest I could get them to go using Afterburner) and whilst you can tell they're on its more a change in the tone produced than an increase in volume. I'd say it's effectively silent - my already very quiet case fans now produce the majority of the noise.
