A survey by the Money Advice Service has found that four in 10 adults in the UK do not have £500 or more in savings. Another by ING bank suggests 28% of UK adults have nothing at all in the bank.

Obviously its a survey, but whatever.

Same situation as the US, profligate til the end.

I am now richer than most. According to surveys ofc. (I somehow suspect that this survey started and ended in a dump however, like Rhyl).

Where do you live? I can easily spend £100 a week on food, but this is London's prices. I could probably survive on £30 if I wanted to, but I don't, so I enjoy it a bit.

Manchester, which the OP's figure of £20k salary and £400 rent seems in line with.

I'm sure I could spend £100 a week on food if I ate at a restaurant every day for £8 and shopped at Waitrose for caviar, but that's incredibly high for a normal shop outside of London.

I will die one day, could be any day from today onwards.
So what is the point of having savings if you could die tomorrow.

Its a just a me thing!

I do have assets though but no cash.

Or lock your mortgage down fixed rate, given the low interest rates atm. Managed to lock mine down to £270/month, for TEN years. £270/month until 2026!! The house in front of mine (identical, but minus a garden) is being rented for £450/month!

I earn around the £20k a year mark and I am absolutely not skint. Just because I can't go out and buy a brand new car every 6 months doesn't make me skint. Plus not living in London, or England for that matter, helps.

Its not the size of your wage it is what you do with it

people would look at my lifestyle and assume I was on 10x even 20x what I am (and I'm not a penny in debt).
