Nvidia CEO To Break Major Gaming & VR News At CES 2017 Keynote

1080Ti would be too little for such an announcement they're hinting at. Has to be either Volta or a VR gizmo. If it is Volta then it will be a paper launch, I expect. But my money would be on VR gizmo which could be impressive.

LOL he thinks Vega will be announced in January ;):p;D

Maybe you should keep this quote for Q1 2017 :p

No, read it again. I alluded to the Nvidia announcement will be January....which could mean AMD announce Vega any time after that. Nvidia announced the 980Ti before the Fiji release and got the card out at least 6-8 weeks before also. So technically it could be any time in Q1 2017 for small vega. We all know that large vega (Enthusiast) is said to be coming 2H 2017.

So yes, small Vega could well be announced January as it will no doubt have GDDR5X and not HBM2.

There you go, another quote for Q1 2017 for you. ;)

Quite a lot in truth but not as much as I would like with this continued heat :(

Elite Dangerous is still my 'go to' game and it just looks fantastic on the Rift.

Yeah, I definately think we need some new KILLER games to give VR a boost. I imagine it will be the launch of the Sony HMD which will give VR a welcome fanfare in October/November.

I don't mind that at all, as it will get the concept of VR into the mainstream and get a lot more interest from the masses....and we need that right now to really kickstart it all proper like.

:)

Agreed. The more take-up, the more chance VR has of making it. The res is 'ok' on the rift but not quite there yet. I have no worries with the refresh rate and only once did I feel a little sick but that was a combination of a massive hangover and watching a replay of PCars and looking out the window :D

Not sure if I am just wishful thinking with NVidia doing a VR headset but I am hoping it will happen and not a paltry res either.

Definitely not a 1080 Ti or regular gaming GPU, this is a CES keynote speech, not a gaming conference. He will be talking about the latest advances in HPC, deep learning, automotive, the partnerships with Volvo and Tesla etc. There is likely a preview of Volta, which has rumored to be pulled back to 2017 release.

There could be some interesting VR related news. NVidia were working on some light-field technology that would make appropriate corrections for the stereo distance thus you actually see a 3D image rather than 2 different 2Dimages in each eye. This reduces the cognitive dissonance and makes VR less likely to give a headache.

Pascal P100 was first shown at CES 2015 and you won't be able to genuinely buy it till CES 2017... so take Volta announcements with regards to professional cards coming up with a grain of salt.

There is also rumour that Volta... being a new architecture and set for 10nm, has been pushed back as 10nm has been pushed back. So they are adding a Kabylake style "next generation" product which would be basically Pascal + a few tweaks and some process improvements over the past year to give effectively just a minor Pascal refresh. If that is true then Volta(a newer architecture and big update) has slipped back and will just be called something new while the Volta name gets 'brought forward' to a simple refresh card.

That actually sounds pretty cool,

I still think it's too pricey for now, Apparently sales since the initial release have slowed to a trickle too.

hopefully a 'VR gizmo', GTX 1080 is powerful enough to saturate any existing software demands on the current headsets, I want something with the same overall design as the rift but double the pixel density and significantly more horizontal field of view and no lens flare artifacts

Yer, it is too pricey for the mainstream. There is alternatives but no idea if they are any good, excluding the Vive of course. And not surprised to hear sales have slowed down either, the people who were keen have it now and when you look at forums, VR seems to be a bit of a marmite thing and people either love it or hate it. I do hope that those who dismiss it without trying it first would at least have a play before making their statements though. It is a great tech that of course isn't for everyone but it needs to be tried.

PSVR solution works fine, though. :/

The end result is 120fps, so it's well ahead of the 90fps you claim as a must.

It doesn't work like that. Doubling refresh rate with interpolation/reprojection/timewarp is not the same at all as actually rendering at that doubled frame rate.

If you compared the Vive/PSVR side-by-side you'd see a large difference. Also you could see it just with a Vive, if you downclocked the PC it's attached to so reprojection turned on, then swap between it on/off, you'll see a big difference.

More games and support are needed. My mate has stopped using his Vive due to there not being enough games out there for it atm. The games that use hand controllers are truly great fun but most are not from big studios and are a little short.

My favorite demo so far has to be Star Wars. It looked great and using the light saber felt great. Shame the demo is only 5-10 minutes long. Some atmosphere you get though.

When software catches up it should be a blast for those that have headsets.

Yes, it actually does work like that. It is a *real* 120fps being output and more than achieves the latency and motion smoothness necessary.

I've used all the headsets. There is nothing wrong with the PSVR's implementation reprojecting from 60fps to 120fps. It's quite brilliant, really.

Not perfect, but the problems are more to do with the potential for visual artifacts than it not being sufficiently high enough framerate for VR.

And no, you cannot accurately test this out using a Vive. The timewarp technique SteamVR uses when it has dropped frames is not the same as Sony is using. It's also doing 45fps->90fps, not 60fps->120fps and can likely be done more efficiently(faster and more consistent) on a PS4 than on PC. Of course it's not as good as native rendering speed, but trust me man, it's gonna be more than fine when used like this. I've tried it and many, many others have as well and found it to be entirely sufficient.

Software is never gonna catch up if people stop buying the headsets, though. That's really the main problem. Developers wont stick around if there isn't money to be made and a growing install base to rely on.

Prices need to come down first and foremost.

Yea the price definitely needs to come down.

The PSVR looks to have some really nice VR games coming. Sony's E3 show had some games i would like to try. My Favorite is the new Resident Evil. That might even come to PC at some point.

There's no good reason for it not to come to PC VR, honestly. Especially with the whole thing being built to be played in VR.
