I think you're just looking for ways to discredit him. And to be honest, it makes you look desperate when it was very clear the reasoning why he chose that wording. That is even assuming it was him who wrote that post and not a PR person for his campaign.

If it could not have been written properly it should not have been posted at all (whether it fit in the character limit or not).

It just looks crass and rather stupid.

Think about it.

The time it would take for the assailant to put down his assault rifle and reach for his knife, is all the time an armed citizen would need to put him down before he can stab anyone.

It is informal though, bordering on slang. The correct and formal use of the word is 'through', even in America.
