Malaysia

Work is sending me to Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) for 2-3 weeks next month. Anyone got any tips regarding Malaysia?

Don't buy drugs.

:EDIT: Oh that's the Philippines. Well it's still a bit naughty, so probably best not to anyway.

Get used to Nasi Goreng?

The only thing I know about Malaysia is that my girlfriend went there whilst she was travelling, years ago. She said absolutely every bit of food was horrendously spicy so she couldn't eat anything apart from Nasi Goreng. Personally I like the sound of the spicy food, but I understand it's all pretty damn hot to anyone's tastebuds :p

taxis can be quite scammy. they dont just charge more they might drive around a bit before you reach your destination so that would be a double whammy of wasting money and time. consider uber or learn the roads with google maps

I lived there for 18 months (though a while ago) and visited more recently for 3 weeks. What do you want to know exactly?

Primarily tips, things not to do (like in some places an open handed wave is an insult etc), places to avoid, things to be aware of when driving, anything I should know about airport customs etc. Whether there are times of day or night, or specific days of the week that have things I should be aware of (like, they dont work on Wednesdays after midday or something bizarre like that). Any cultural things like in Japan, with bowing and so on. Or some places in the world where you should only address the male when its a couple and so on

Well for most of those Malaysia is very Westernised, especially KL. It always has been, being a British colony, and still is being full of ex-pats and bordering Singapore which has English as its national language and where many English-speaking companies base their Asian HQs as a result.

There's no real faux pas like in the Middle East and most are generally easy going. The worst you'll get is people wanting to take photos of you because you're such a pasty ***, but that's about it and only if you venture to remoter areas.

If you want pointers on what to see and do then let me know what you're into and how much free time you'll have.

Thanks, I'm not too bothered in regards of sight seeing, I will have VERY little time where I am not working

Ah well. Get yourself to Jalan Alor at least, you'll have time for that if you're living and working in KL. It's just a hustle bustle street full of local authentic restaurants and street food vendors. Jalan means Street fyi.

Try durian :D:cool:.
