What have you done to your car today?

Fitted HID's. Now I can actually see at night. The beam and cut off is spot on but I have annoying black shadows through the middle of each beam, apparently down to the electrode rod reflecting, you can only put the bulbs in one way on an EP3 facelift then the projectors flip everything 180 degrees and said rod thus must be creating a shadow on the floor. I'd have to modify the headlight assy itself to sort that. Think I'll leave it, I'm not taking the bumper off again :D

You live in a stunning part of the world - let alone the country. I've done many road trips in many beautiful mountainous parts of the world and the Scottish Highlands is absolutely right up there with the very best.

Why thank you sir. Do you have any recommendation? I found the drive from Fort William to Morar to be amazing myself though I haven't been much further. Never seen Skye either. Would love to take the new car the long way home when I get finished with this course :)

Looks fantastic - I've got a friend who's recently moved there so next summer I'm thinking of flying over there and renting something. Won't be as fun as a proper road trip like yours and they'll probably only let me rent a Fiesta or something but the scenery / roads look amazing enough that I don't think I'd care.

Trust me you'll have an absolute blast in a fiesta there.

I don't think it's a £400 repair but I could be wrong- paint could come to that alone I reckon. I have no experience of body work being done. It might not be too pricey if they can pull out the door and sill dents. Likely to get expensive if they need to replace anything.

Edit: It's a 2010 Honda Insight ES.

I will talk to a body shop that's done paintwork for me before regarding a quote - I'd quite like them to do the work even if my insurance company are paying. Can do the maths regarding claiming vs not. However - the insurance will have the incident on file. Likely that will now affect my premium irrespective of what happens with NCB.

Further edit: A glance at PH repair threads seems to indicate that it's going to be in the £600-£1k region to fix properly. A bit of a tidy up would come to a few hundred.

OK - Dropped into body shop earlier. They will be emailing a quote through.

However - it surprised me that they are more concerned about the door than the sill. They are recommending the passenger door be replaced. Wasn't expecting to have done that much damage within a yard of a standing start tbh.

Obviously replacing a door will push the price up a bit.

For now I've asked them to provide a like for like quote, to match the standard of a repair they would do via insurance with new parts when necessary.

There will be cheaper options, like getting a door from a scrapped car, but we'll see how much the new component is first.

.

Why yes. Yes it would.

Quote in. Drumroll... £2.4k (inc VAT). - Including new door and sill (talking to the guy he was definitely sure about the door and was going to give the sill some thought). Getting tempting to let the insurance handle this one.

I hasten to add - that is using new parts in a Honda approved body shop. Cheaper options will be available.

Ouch... :(

Have you got any pictures of the damage? What colour is the car? Is there no chance of just swapping the door without the paint match being terrible? (Black is usually OK for that for example. Whereas silver/red/most other colours are awful for it.)

Cerulean blue - a metallic bright blue.

Edit :As for pics - I used to use flickr but my account exprired. What do people recommend these days?

Thats a really nice colour, but I think you'd be astoundingly lucky to find a random door off of another one which is a good colour match. :(

I feel moderately better, having found out that a friend did exactly the same as me to his van - in the same tesco car park a few weeks ago. Both of us just forgot that the low barrier (visible in one pic) was there. He has more of an excuse though - no line of sight at all in his van. I might have seen a cm or two if I'd looked more carefully.

Edit: On the other hand - I wonder how this turned out? http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/local-news/shoppers-fury-over-sainsburys-bollard-859402 (the idea of me claiming against the property owner for my having driven into a stationary object seems kind of preposterous...)

the sill looks like a more expensive repair there..

That's what I thought. Nasty fold on it. I thought the door would have been a case of pull out and paint - but apparently not. The assessor was clearly more concerned with the door.

Edit: Anyway - when the quote came back they wanted to replace both.

Just outside Kyle of Localsh.

We had stunning weather all week :)

I stopped in that very spot a few weeks ago. Camped at Glen Nevis to ascend Ben Nevis however one day we drove up the coast and just kept going and going. Everywhere you turn it stunning. I ended up doing over 1000 miles in 4 days as well as some serious walking (Carn Mor De Arete to Ben Nevis). Epic drive for you though!

Great roads up there. Smooth, steady and great scenery.

Yea, it was rather far - a good 500 miles before it even starts. We broke it up with an overnight stop to see the Lake District and took in Hardknott and Wrynose pass. Which is quite, errr... interesting in a 5 Series

Spent around 2 hours driving around roads on Snowdon. Culminating in a chippy in Llanberis on the shore of the lake/river.

Points noted.

Some people drive so god-damn slow :(

Also, my car is far too slow :(
