Apple to Introduce New Macs at October 27 Event

Well, you could build a dame fine PC with that budget which would out do any of Apples offering for years.

This old argument. *sigh*

Yes you could build a crazy machine for the money but it would have an OS on it which a lot of apple users do not want.

Lot's raging here on the redesign....would've been the same raging if it was exactly the same form factor and a spec bump.

I love the look of it, yes the brexit prices hurt but we're going to be seeing that a lot everywhere.

My home Mac is a Late 2013 rMBP which is still absolutely great for everything, so I may hold off. I'll wait until I can get my hands on one.

It's one step closer to my dream of full blown desktop peripherals that turn your laptop into a comparable desktop machine. I know it can be done already but the components are still super expensive.

Its the truth and a valid point....I didn't mention anything about which OS to install on the PC.

That's down to the user. Sample as that.

You're missing the point. A big reason why a lot of people like Apple products is the operating system it provides. Yeah you can hack it onto windows hardware but its not as reliable as an Apple MacBook or whatever and when it's your daily machine, you need the reliability.

On other hardware you have a choice of Linux, Unix or Windows. If you want macOS. You need Apple hardware.

Also, Windows has come a long way. Unless there is a specific app thats not available on windows vs on Apple then i honestly cant see why a apple user cant use a windows machine.

For example, i have both mac and win machines and run both lightroom and photoshop. The windows machine runs LR and PS better and smoother and the overal OS of windows feels as snappy as OSX.

I had a Surface pro 4 and that wasnt bad either.

The problem with people in general is that sometimes they get too comfy where they are and ignore other options.

Win is very very reliable OS now. My Main Win desktop machine never crashes but ironically sometimes my macbook reboots itself due to a crash.

The OS is the why I use my Apple kit too, I realise I can use Windows for web development, but having tried both, I prefer the MacOS environment. That said, the regular USB port removal seems a bit much :(

I didn't say Windows wasn't reliable. In fact I completely agree with you. There isn't anything I can do on my MacBook that I can't do on my work provided windows laptop.

However, when I am buying a machine for personal use, I PREFER to use macOS.

This is the point I am trying to get at.

I need a mac for iOS dev and general web dev stuff. Windows does the web dev stuff but almost everything web is better/geared up for a *nix based environment and I couldn't do iOS stuff on windows.

I still might get one of these but I definitely want to go to an apple store and have a play.

p.s. To the other developers in this thread. What is your issue with the esc key? It still has an esc key and what are you using it for at any rate. I can't think how many times a day I use the esc key but its almost never.

Building anything is only an option for a tiny tiny fraction of the potential market for this. If you suggested building a PC full stop to most people you'd get a blank expression and then accusations of witchcraft so it's just not a valid argument.

Having just spent some time looking into it, I'm seriously considering a Razer Blade Stealth now. With the core external gpu box it could even replaced my current gaming rig, at least in theory.

More research needed of course but moving from Apple is now looking like a serious possibility. Especially when I remind myself that the main reasons I switched to a MacBook in the first place (Aperture and iWork) are no longer available or not up to the job in their current form.

Very torn really. Wasn't overly impressed by the Apple event. However, was pretty impressed by the Microsoft one. I'm thinking I might go for the refreshed Surface Book now. Loving the sound of the battery life and gaming on the side.

New MacBooks look ok but kinda wish Apple just embraced the 2 in 1 concept and introduced a touchscreen. Seems like they are refusing to embrace it because it'll no doubt risk iPad sales.

I do love my MacOS and Windows 10 Parallels setup on my MacBook Air though. But personally I am finding myself using the Windows 10 side of things more and more. Particularly since getting an Android phone and having all my notifications sync with Cortana.

So think I'm an Apple refugee at this point. Surface Book for me.

Cmd + Alt + Esc (Mac)
Ctrl + Shift + Esc (Windows)

Is the soft Esc going to work while in VMs / RDP? Major downer if not.

Of course it will. Its a software key but that doesn't have anything to do with it. I don't know why people think a mechanical esc switch is magically different to a software one.

If you need to force quit an app you can just open activity monitor and do it as well. When you code an operating system you don't ignore the esc key and it just does what you want.

You can remap keys in macOS
You still have an esc key
There are ways to do everything you use the esc key for without using the esc key currently anyway.

I hope my 2011 Macbook Air keeps going, as I won't be replacing it with another Mac now - the prices are silly, and removing USB ports is stupid.

I'm in exactly the same position as you, looking at my 2013 rMBP and thinking that actually it does more than well enough and still retains a couple of features (mag safe, SD slot) that I need but Apple not longer value.

I imagine anyone running the old trashcan Mac Pro must have completely written off Apple after tonight. Not a single mention of any other macs.

They better switch the iPhone to USB-C next year. It's ludicrous having all these different ports.

Touchbar looks a bit gimmicky. Might be okay in pro applications with practice, but tbh I navigate the keyboard and touchpad just fine without taking my eyes off the screen. Not sure I want another screen below my screen.

Doubt I'll be upgrading my Mid 2012 512GB 16GB machine any time soon with those bonkers prices.

£1900 for the entry level 15" model!! Are they having a laugh?

It was mental that anyone thought the trashcan mac pro was Apples return to the pro market. It wasn't a pro device, and I'd bet money those arguing it was don't use them in production. They've been steadily ignoring it year on year since canning the xserve. We've been forced to run them at work because the Photoshop/Wacom combination on windows is still horrendous, but anything else we've shifted to HP Z640s and 840s and haven't looked back, and we were a full mac office top to bottom. They're powerhouses and don't make a squeak of noise, and we get all the benefits of upgrading components when it's necessary. When we can convince the retouchers to move of Mac without quitting en masse they'll all be getting them too.

Feeling extremely good now about my 2015 rMBP (£1359 with educational discount)! I really like the OLED touchbar which makes the new one look way more futuristic, however the lack of a normal USB port is barmy, it makes no sense at all. If they're truly targeting professional users they should have realised that literally everything uses USB. I can appreciate that they want to be forward thinking, but making a proprietary port hasn't exactly worked out in the personal computing world for them before with firewire. Mag safe is a fantastic concept and I don't know why they've ditched it. Perhaps they're preparing for inductive charging on all their devices?

They will still sell an absolute boatload of these as people do seem to love the Apple experience compared to that of Windows. Microsoft has really upped their game recently, but I don't think this will trouble Apple.

Is there not some sort of USB-C dock that can be powered off the USB port but provide several older style USB ports/ethernet/HDMI etc? One that just clips on to the side of the laptop would solve a few issues, but still not the removal of magsafe :(
