Do you ever get wound up by knowledge you think people should have?

If someone is going to run a red light they will, am talking about seeing the cars approaching from 30-50 yards away and the light is already red.
I still assume there's a crossing there and/or they're pressing the button for a reason, though. Maybe they're not so good at judging the speed of oncoming traffic...?

Not sure what it is with some people, they just don't see the world the same as I or many of you do.
Friend of mine would rather drive 40 miles and pay someone £25 to change the wiper blades on his car, than take 15 seconds to find the 1:35 video instruction on YouTube... He's not thick or incompetent. He just has no interest in doing it. Same for building his own PC, despite being a highly qualified IT support officer for a well known media company...

People are different, with different skillsets and areas of knowledge.

People do this at work with lifts... really grates my pee.. they think if they press the call button 100 times the lift will come faster.

been guilty of this one once or twice.....

You thought the Queen alien was coming?

Chancer?

Isn't that called lazy?

EDIT
Just remembered one.......
People who stand still on travelators at airports !

Stand on one side.
Walk on the other.
Lots of people are incapable of walking long distances, due to medical issues or age, nothing wrong with standing on them, same as escalators, stand one side, walk on the other.
Many countries have this marked at the start of the walk way or escalator, for some reason here those marking never seem to be present, which is odd considering we have a sign for signs sake in many cases.

Good thread this - I always watch University Challenge and am amazed at knowledge of most of the student's - Then up comes a simple question (to me it is) and they have no idea - But they would win hands down as quantum physics and King Henry 10th isn't my field.

Asked wife what Large Hadron Collider is - she said it's in second drawer down with saucepans :D

Years ago was watching program on people on dole and presenter was telling this woman the government hasn't got enough money - She said why don't they print some more.

I never walked when on moving walkway - in fact I needed the rest.

I am 72 and was counting internet dependent devices in house - got to 11 and don't have any gaming thingies.

I do online banking - pay all bills online - got swipe card and didn't start all this till my middle 40's

My gf's brothers gf is so ridiculous terrible at geography to the point of face palming.

She thought

Guy in our work never knew what a drone was, whilst we were talking about it for the use of sports. This guys is an electronics technician. :/

How could he not have heard of one of the biggest topics about at the moment is beyond me.

99% people don't know what lithography is or what LASER stands for!

I don't have a clue about, pop music now, culture, TV programs, social media or fashion.
Just metal block it out, it just trash for the mind.

Without looking it up, light amplified something something radiation. Remember it being mentioned in GCSE science and everyones minds being blown. :p

e; Light Amplification (by) stimulated emission (of) radiation. Thanks Google.

This, I don't often ask how to do things, not because I'm a super-genius who knows all, but because I can Google stuff. Unfortunately this means the entirety of my office comes to me for technical advice, I'd tell them to use Google but I fear my role would then become redundant and I'd be phased out of the business.

Haha, now you know how web developers feel.

If stackoverflow shuts down I'm screwed!

I don't know where most A and M roads go or where most places are, either on their own or in relation to each other... but that's what A-Zs and Google Maps are for.

To be fair, I don't really know what it is or what DAB stands for either.
We actually have two of them, so I know it's 'digital radio' and that the signal is generally crap compared to the normal version, but that's about it...

If I haven't been there several times myself, I'm the same. I also take several trips to learn a route, because I'm watching the road and the traffic, rather than the landmarks.

But there's much more general knowledge now than there was two generations ago, as well... and the sort of things people *need* to know has changed over time.

None of those are common sense though, apart from the actual act of looking up how to do them.

None of my previous phones would let you do that.... You'd have to end the call first.

That one IS common sense, though, especially given the number of cars and cyclists who routinely run red lights!!!
Having right of way on the road is small consolation when you're wheeling yourself out of hospital having lost both legs...

Cant be bothered to cut out the other quotes but...

Agreed none of those examples related to common sense I agree, that wasn't my point, people lack it either way.

Your phone hasn't allowed that? One of my first smart phones five years or so ago allowed that :p either way, she's had an iPhone since iPhone 3, so it's not like it's a new feature.

I guess i find people lack of willing to TRY and learn more annoying.

There are some things which are just beyond my intellect but most things can be worked out by background knowledge, reading, careful observation and an analytical mind.

It can be infuriating dealing with people who can't go from a to b without being shown how but I don't consider myself superior just because of the way I think, just as I try to not feel inferior to people who 'get' pure maths :(

Agree with this. As you all know, I'm not Einstein, but I find a lot of satisfaction in resolving calls/incidents I've never seen before, without asking to be walked through the solution. And - of course - Googling doesn't count! :p :p

I always wonder why some people don't want to try to figure things out for themselves. Why they ask questions that they could have Googled in less time than it takes to write an email or walk over to ask. Or spent a bit of time experimenting. Who doesn't like experimenting? Esp in IT, when almost everything equates to playing with big boy toys :p

Excluding the times when they're genuinely just busy (or overloaded, it happens, and I'm glad I get all the time I need to play/investigate), you have to wonder why they don't just have a go.

The crux of the matter is, as far as I see it: nothing I do is rocket science. So if I can figure it out with a bit of probing (I specialise in trial an error, with emphasis on the error :p), then really most people should be able to.

But I guess people without the probing/analysing/playing/experimenting mindset don't find it enjoyable??

Basic IT skills... I'm not talking about sitting someone in front of a PC for the first time and expecting them to learn how to create databases, these are people who have been using computers for 15+ years and still struggle with basic tasks.

I had one member of staff who struggled with copy and paste, they would print out an email then start typing it up again in Word if they needed to use some text in a report. Months later I introduced them to google translate as they had some Arabic documents that needed reading, every week she would print them off, look at her keyboard, then send me an email asking how to do it again.

Another person likes to send the same email 5 times just in case it doesn't come through... all 5 usually do, if there's a mistake in the email address, we're not getting any of them so it doesn't matter.

Another has a habit of breaking any excel spreadsheet she can get her hands on. We try to make it as simple as possible using dropdowns for days/tasks but she'll leave it as whatever was last used, then write in manually a different option in a different cell and none of the data is recorded properly (will leave "May" in the month field, but write "October" next to it even though she could just write "October" in that field and it would accept it). Funny how her expenses worksheet is always perfect yet the reports to go with it are too stressful and difficult. 10 years with the same reports and still screws it up.

Sometimes I wonder what it really means when in a job reference it states "must know how to use office products", is that PC related or the ability to staple two pieces of paper together without getting your tie sandwiched between the sheets.

Because most of the time scenarios like this is in a work place, where time constraints are important. Also the chance of getting it wrong with 'experimenting' increases. Downtime is no good for anything like that.
