Hi all
Just a bit of background, last week I decided to upgrade to a 1070. Long story short existing case was to small so I got a new one. Unfortunately, in the process of reseating everything, I slipped and bent some of the pins on my CPU socket. Never had that happen before in 10+ years of building my own PCs...

Anyhow after hours of trying to readjust the pins I am still having trouble, so have decided to give up on my msi z97 gaming m board. And get a replacement.

Now I've noticed that there isn't many z97 boards out there any more but still some decent ones around 120-160quid.

Would you stick with 1150 socket or try and resell my 4690k and 32gb of DDR3RAM for something newer?

If so, would you go Z170/1151?

Thanks

Thanks OJ that will give me a starting point to tinker with (and will.likely stretch the budget a little so no pints for the remainder of the month haha).

In terms of 16GB RAM is there.any kit you would recommend that's maybe a little bit more value for money?

It's all very similar tbh so long as you keep it 3000MHz - 3200MHz (dropping below that you will see a performance drop) so basically go with what will look good in the build / is good value. Would also add that Skylake is Dual Channel, so there's no benefit in going 4 x 4GB over 2 x 8GB apart from looks if you want to fill all slots, although this will obviously prevent you from adding another 2 x 8GB sticks in the future.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £446.06
(includes shipping: £11.10)

Something like the above works as well and saves you about £50

edit: the RAM is on this week only reduced from £97 I have the quad channel kit in my build and it does the job!

Just a thought, do you not currently have a cooler?

I do but it is a Corsair 105. I am kind of sad to see it go but as far as I know it does not fit this socket? I got it 2 years ago, will the bracket still fit 1151?

On the current product page it says it does fit 1151? Bit confused...

You'll be fine using your current cooler as all 115x sockets use the same spacing :)

Ah lovely thanks for clearing that up.

Means I can spend a little more on a motherboard.

Which ones would you recommend that have at least an onboard debug LED? Thats been handy on my old board.

Personally I prefer the Asus as I've never had a single issue with the numerous Asus boards I've owned. Only ever tried 1 Gigabyte (many years ago mind...) and had a few BIOS issues, so went back to Asus. I use the board above in my current gaming rig and its faultless really: Good BIOS updates, easy to flash the BIOS via USB even with the PC turned off if you did have an issue, Overclocks well, perfectly stable etc. The Gigabyte does seem a popular board but have had no experience with it myself so will leave that one to someone else :D

Why on earth spend a fortune on upgrading for a few extra fps. The 4690k is a excellent cpu and Skylake adds very little while demanding stupidly high prices (£230 for a i5 is a disgrace). OCUK sell the Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 3 for £104 which is a decent board and a quick look around elsewhere shows several other Gigabyte, Asus and Asrock Z97 boards in stock.

I am very torn between upgrade and sticking. On the one hand, sticking would be sensible money wise. on the other hand, I will upgrade some day. Not entirely sure of the pros and cons.

Stick. Buying a new motherboard is massively cheaper than switching to Skylake for next to no gain. Wait until there is something worth upgrading to.

Would you consider 2nd hand? There may be more Z97 mobos out there from people who ARE upgrading to Skylake.

The price demanded by second hand on a well know auction site is frankly astounding, but there are still plenty of new Z97's new if you look around a bit, I would just get the cheapest one that will fulfil your requirements. Some boards are as little as £70 that will get the job done.

Thanks all, I have decided to stick with Z97 for a while, will save some money and then upgrade next year at some stage.

Gone with the gigabyte board above.
