Holidays - travel cards?

I used the Revolut card in the summer in Spain, France and Andorra and it worked without a hitch.

I wouldn't recommend the TravelEx Supercard. I had so many declines during my trip, that I stopped using it.

yep no fees or commission on unlimited purchases and £500 or equivalent on cash withdrawal per month. it really is a fantastic travel card.
2% if you go over 500. but as long as you visiting major cities then everyone takes card.

no charge in sterling, ssame applies, unlimited purchases, less than £500 cash withdrawl per month.
they did recently impose a top figure as well, I cant remember what it's but it was like 3k per month.

thanks for confirmation always good to know before doing anything:D

depends, card is instant, bank transfer is 1-5 days
just be aware that the app and card are geo locked together. so If you leave your phone at home and go traveling to say Spain it wont allow you to use it.
when you land find some free wifi like at airport and sign into app and you should be fine.
I don't know how it exactly works but I had the issue first time I used it abroad. Since then its been fine.

its probably in the faq somewhere.

Are you sure about this? amount of people losing their phone or dropping it the sea must be unreal on holiday :)

Cant see it direct on FAQ but it does say this:

What if I lose my phone?

Your Revolut card will still function the same without your smartphone. You can make ATM withdrawals and card payments, but you will not be able to check your balance or receive notifications on the go. You can top up your Revolut card via transfer - just make sure you know your reference number. Alternatively, contact the in-app support so we can change the mobile number on the account for you. Download the app on a new device, attempt to log in with your mobile number and then choose the option 'I haven't received a code' to chat to support.

I'm not 100%, but one got declined and as far as I can tell within the app, it was a miss match of location.
losing it wouldn't be an issue as it would still show you in the area.
suppose the only way to find out for sure is to ask them.

Does the advice change or are there any gotcha's to consider if travelling to the US as opposed to Europe ? Looking at getting the Halifax clarity card for a trip next year.

No.

Just get your Clarity, use it and chuckle to yourself every time you see these ridiculous threads with these silly prepaid things as your 'holiday prep' simply involves keeping a card in your wallet and benefiting from the best possible exchange rate with zero hassle and complete projection.

I mean for goodness sake, daft apps, geolocks, just use a decent credit card and forget about it!

depends where you are in the states.

a lot of places outside major cities still use magnetic strips, where these wont work.

Cheers gents. Will be New York and I'll have some old school folding currency as well anyway.

Wouldn't bother, just get some from an ATM at JFK on the Clarity. Better than the rate you'll get at an exchange place in the UK even accounting for the nominal interest charge.

We just load up a Thomson travel money card and it has worked well for several trips abroad....

https://www.money4travel.com/tuiuk/travel-money-card

even when I forgot the PIN when we were in Ibiza earlier this year, a quick phone call and jumped through a few ID hoops and a new PIN was authorised which allowed the card to work again in the ATMS's over there.

Shame Revolut has a £500 ATM limit, then it's 2% after. That'll be more expensive that just getting the Halifax Clarity and paying it off regularly to avoid the interest on cash withdrawals.

Perfect travel backup card though.

As probably mentioned already, make sure withdraw in £ (i.e. MasterCard will do the currency exchange for you, so you'll get a near on perfect rate), don't let the machine calculate the exchange value.

Does Revolut work like a CC? So if I lost it, or it got duped, I can get my money back without any issues (if someone spent on it)?

What do you mean here?

ALWAYS USE LOCAL CURRENCY if presented with the option.

That's what I mean, some of the machines I've used word it weirdly, just like I did :p. Don't accept the machine's offered exchange rate basically.

With a Clarity card why are some people saying pay it back on same day to avoid interest charges on page 2?

And others are saying they enjoy there holiday and once back home they pay off the credit or bill before any charges.

Confusing but then I never owned a cc !

If you withdraw from an ATM, you're charged interest from day 1, so it's cheaper to pay it off regularly if you're spending large amounts of cash.

If it's a small amount of cash, mostly machine transactions & a couple of week holiday, don't worry about paying it off until you get home.

If you go to the card section of the app then security, you can turn the geofencing on or off, there are some other useful settings there as well

Revolut is great. I got it in desperation initially, though, because the Supercard beta/trial ended before I went to the States in July and I had to find an alternative. Glad it worked - I highly recommend it.

However, I also now have the new Supercard and I've never had problems with it.

A word about using these things in the States at restaurants though: don't tip with them; use cash instead. Restaurants essentially put a holding charge for the initial bill, and then process the amended total (i.e. with tip) sometime afterwards as a separate charge. The holding charges took 3-5 days to get released on my Revolut card, so after visiting a few restaurants I realised that I had a a fairly sizeable amount of money seemingly missing, only to come back several days later.

Thanks much appreciated, sounds like revolut card is still a top choice for holidays :)

Its a nice security feature but I would switch it off myself and maybe take converted currency funds as a back up or to get started :)

thanks never knew that, also there's a mag strip setting, i swear they used to say that didn't work, either was mistaken or new feature.
