Is a 980ti really not going to cut it for 1440p anymore?

I'll stick with it I think, I'm just being petty as I hate turning down settings. Prefer max everything lol.

imo, 1440p will probably be fine, ultrawide 1440p on the other hand will probably benefit from a 1080ti because i cant max all with a 1080 @ 100fps on it.

This [Ultrawide Resolution] is why I added a second 980ti and it's why I suggested SLI. However, with a micro build the 2nd card isn't an option unless it's full custom water. I do actually have both my cards under a custom loop, but I already had the loop and single 980ti in place so it made more sense to me to add a second 980ti rather than spend £700 on a 15% speed bump.

I thought about water a while back as I miss it, but I'd have to upgrade to a larger case and I only ever buy Lian Li (huge fanboi), so then I'd also get a larger motherboard, which might as well be the new architecture etc etc...

In short, I'd build a new PC which isn't needed so might as well stick to single card lol

Here's another one - have you compared in-game screens for ultra and high/v.high? 90% of the image quality if not more is normally present and ultra just brings in marginal visual benefits by enabling some performance-killing features like shadows...

Lol! That's brilliant :) You really have no idea what you're talking about, do you?

Yeah guys a maniac. I'm playing forza horizon 3 in 4k ultra with no AA on a single 980ti. If I run 1440 ultra I can use 8xmsaa and never go below 60fps.

I agree with this, especially when i am playing online, i tend to not look and stare at the visuals for that long haha

hows the sli scaling on a 980ti? better than 1070 sli?

A few of the latest AAA titles have been **** poor IMHO. Dishonored 2 being the latest example. I will not be getting it until it is fixed that is for sure. I think either we are all being conned into upgrading by rubbishly optimised software or the Devs are getting lazy these days.

OP, your 980Ti should last you at least another year and probably beyond that if you tweak settings a bit. However, I guarantee you will be suffering from poor optimisation on Titles in 2017....then you will think you need to upgrade when in reality that shouldnt be the case.

We are all on the treadmill and they know it. What everyone should do is get a damn good 1080p monitor with the Async Refresh method of your choice and stay at that resolution for a few years. It is a great resolution and IMHO it is good enough for games. You don't need 4K......but they make you think you do.
:D

I doubt that the 980ti is suddenly going to drop off a cliff, it should stay relevant for another year, as long as you're prepared to drop settings a little. And in allot of games there isn't really that much difference between high and ultra. Still, if you have the money and you're worried about it, then yeah, buy pascal.

Just to add a bit of sanity in this thread.

A 980Ti is perfectly fine for modern titles at 1440p. I use a 980Ti on a 1440p G-SYNC monitor at 144Hz and do not feel at all troubled by it.

BF1, Titanfall 2 all run fine.

As for wanting to play brand new AAA titles at All Ultra with everything turned on then you need to be realistic, most of the time even the newest generations of cards cannot drive such settings at what most would consider acceptable rates. (For me 60FPS is not acceptable)

Swapping from a 980Ti to a 1080 now is lunacy, and you will instantly regret that choice when you realise the 1080 is not offering you a huge amount more for your money.

My 980ti gives me over 100fps in BF1 at 1440p at ultra even without g-sync it's incredibly smooth. Given that pascal isn't that different I can't see the 980ti suffering from lack of optimisation that badly. Too swap for a 1080 will cost you at least £300 and you'll get another 25% tops

look, with a 980TI you still have a long time of good performance ahead of you, I would say a whole of a lot more than a year. 6gb of memory will do just fine until most games start to demand at least 8 gb and I don't see that happening in the next 2 years anyway.

It all depends how fast a refresh rate your monitor supports... people say things like...

"A 980ti is a beast at 1440p and will last you for years to come", and Im sure its just fine on a 60hz 2560 x 1440 monitor, but it wont push high refresh monitors near or into the 100's, not on modern titles!

If you have a 980ti, then the only worthwhile upgrade at a minimum would be either a 2nd one in SLI or a 1080ti.

As for 1440p, a 980ti should be able to hold at least 60 fps in most games. Any that doesn't is poorly optimised and coded poorly. I say this especially considering that I've been running a good many games at 1440p on my 970, also on max/ultra settings and holding 60fps or more. The moment it struggles to hold 60, I drop down to 1080p.

If you want high framerate 90/100+ on 1440p though... the aforementioned 1080ti should be the card to go for. It's also the card I'm looking at getting, unless AMD's Vega blows it out of the water. I want to make the most of the 144Hz refresh rate on my 1440p monitor.
