So at cold it's about/just under 1 bar and when on it whacks round to about 2.5-3bar

Expansion vessel issue?

Sounds like classic expansion vessel, in most cases it's easier to fit an external one then swap the one in the boiler with the added bonus that nobody can get arsey about you doing it yourself!

Dang. I was hoping for a "Nah, just do XYZ yourself, that might fix it".

Reason being, this boiler is **** but has been working flawlessly for a while, i fear that getting someone to sort the expansion vessel out (which is right and the back and requires taking it all apart) will just give show-stopper issues once done :(, the ol' fix one problem create another sort of thing.

Alas! I have no choice, i'll get on the blower to the AA.

Climb up so you can look at the top of the boiler, you should see a schrader valve (car/bike tyre valve) on the expansion vessel. Poke the pin in the middle to let some pressure out. If air comes out then you might just need to pump it up a bit, if water comes out then it's scrap.

Just had an external vessel fitted to my boiler, it's an old boiler but seems to work ok - and I'm not keen on replacing it for another 12 months or so.

We have an external on hours madness to take the boiler off the wall to swap it!

Haha! Yeah, like Ideal would fit an external valve to pump it up... It's internal, right at the back. Requires the whole thing taking apart :p :(

I would like an external one, but there's simply nowhere to put it, unless we re-locate the boiler...

Doesn't need to be anywhere near the boiler, ours is in the cellar miles away!
