Ford service pricing.

Email from a different address name etc about a similar car asking for a service proce and see if they include vat

Quoting prices without VAT to make it more attractive seems to be a regular thing in the motoring world :( I hate it.

They really need to make it a legal requirement to state "exc VAT" if they're not including the VAT price. At the end of the day, you as a consumer (not a business) have to pay the VAT regardless, so why bother quoting without it.

I would phone them up and say you've been overcharged, as per your quote it was X price, and you've had to pay Y price.

They'll come back with the excuse that the quote was done without VAT, i would then say that the quote doesn't say excludes VAT, so you go on the assumption that it does include VAT. You don't buy something from Tesco and then have to worry about adding the VAT on at the end.

I agree that this is quite annoying - after all, its not as if many jobs will be VAT exempt at the average little car maintenance garage. Even the main Mercedes dealer in Oxford does it.

However i do think you need to be a little bit naive to actually get stung or get confused, we all know its standard practice, as such i will always ask them to clarify the inclusive price.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that unless the customer is clearly addressed as being one who can recover VAT then the quote should always include any non-optional taxes (ie VAT). I'm guessing it's not legally binding though and only useless guidelines from some body.

Consumer protection act 1987.

Spoke on the phone to service manager and she is getting the difference refunded :)
