GTX 1070 Coil Whine - New PSU Needed?

Hi,

I have an MSI 1070 Seahawk which is nice and quiet, however when opening up a game there's a noticeable coil whine noise.

After some reading it seems that changing my PSU may reduce/cure this.

I currently have: BeQuiet Pure Power L8 730W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply

Does anyone have any recommendations as to which the safest would be to hopefully cure this issue? It's really irritating as the PC is silent.

Thanks

It would seem to be to do with the quality of the psu. Have a read of this thread. In the psu section of the forums we have had a few threads regarding coil whine and just about all where solved by moving to a better quality Gold rated or higher psu. I have no coil whine at all on my 1070 with my Seasonic G series 750w.

same for me, no coil whine on my 1080 with this PSU:

Cougar GX V3 1050W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply
CA-025-CU.

It's around £100 so a lot cheaper than some of the PSUs in that linked thread.

Ordered this one as it was on offer "Super Flower Leadex Platinum 850W Fully Modular "80 Plus Platinum" Power Supply - Black"

Good luck.

Your existing PSU is by no means a bad one. There's a reasonable chance that your new PSU won't cure your graphic card's coil whine. If it does cure the whine it's money well spent. If not, it might be a waste of money.

I had more coil whine with mine when using a CX 750 now awhile I have some it's so quiet I can't hear it unless I turn all the fans off and put my ear to the case.

I had a 1070. Coil whine when side off and really quiet in house. 850w G2 EVGA gold. Tried my backup CX750m . Coil whine gone. Go figure. Today the Corsair powers my current rig fine.

This shows that if you are buy a graphics card with coil whine, you may have to spend more money on a PSU to cure the problem. Even if you do spend money, the problem may not be cured. Also, a "better" PSU does not guarantee less coil whine.

It's odd how manufacturers can put billions of transistors onto a PCB and make them produce amazing graphics on your monitor, yet they have trouble preventing a coil of wire from buzzing.

I had that years ago when adaptive power was enabled. I guess turning the power up and down again many times per second disagrees with something on the card. Mine is silent (except for 3 fans ;)) when its on full power. Worth a shot.

I have tested two 1080s with an AX760, G2 650W and leadex gold 650W. They had coil whine in every situation.

Still hunting for a cure.

But did you try the 2000 watt platinum that offers much cleaner power? That's the **** you get lit of them when you complain.

The EVGA PSUs are suppose to be second to none but unless you buy a silly overpowered one they will always have always excuse as to why you have coil whine.

EDIT - I get bad coil whine whenever their is a system change ie. Windows updates etc. Reinstalling the gpu drover reduces it severely.

Try two other 1080s. ;)

I think that if you`ve got a card with a dodgy VRM choke, it's going to whine no matter what PSU you use.

There may well be instances where a PSU causes coil whine, but I suspect that in the majority of cases it's mainly due to the graphics card itself.

I have never had coil whine with any card either NV or AMD and I have had a few over the years. I am not saying I want to either, but does anyone have a recording of the worst coil whine?

EVGA support has been very good at sending out replacement 1080s and paying for return postage when the cards whine on recieval.

I only own and use a single 1080. The other is an advanced rma 1080 that I recieve, test for whine and send back - repeatedly. Part of the reason I am so ****ed at the "thermal (non) issue" is it is taking away support and cards from people with actual issues.
