Composite Front Doors

Rockdoor is the obvious one. I'd look on trustatrader or get a personal recommendation from someone locally if it were me.

It should be ok with the door on the right (hinged on the left) if you get it made in 2 frames, joined by a steel structural mullion. Whichever way you have it i'd still go for 2 frames and a steel mullion. It'll make it a lot more sturdy.

If you have the door hinged on the right, would that not then block your light switch?

Thanks for this. No it wouldn't block any switches if it hinged on the right. However it would then open across the cloakroom / downstairs toilet...is this a no-no?

Regarding two frames, I might as well hinge onto the brick and avoid the extra expense of two frames I guess?

If I did have the door in the middle of the opening with a glass on either side, can you get frames thin enough for my door opening?

We fitted a Rockdoor Elite in chartwell green to on of our houses 6 months ago, looks great.

Always been impressed with Rockdoor, quality is spot on, when the time comes we will be using them for our other houses.

Update - we've finally ordered a Rockdoor Ultimate composite door in Irish Oak (inside and out), with an automatic locking mechanism and bar handle inside and out.

It'll be mounted centrally to the frame with misted laminated glass sidelights either side of the door.

It's basically exactly like this ('Indiana') but with a letter plate at the bottom:

We really wanted a solid oak door but from talking to lots of people, they come with a lot of maintenance baggage that we're too busy to bother with.

It should be installed around the end of January. Cost is £2.7k.

Looks ace, better get working on everything else at the front so it all looks as good as the door. :D

Was going to say the same 2.7K front door is lovely but will look a bit out of place for me!

Fair comments, the pics above are two years old and we've done quite a lot to the front since then in terms of tidying up the lawn and path, putting up trellis and climbing plants, etc.

Is there anything specific you'd do to the frontage? Always keen to take advice on how to improve the look of the house. New lights maybe?

For the style of house the lights look fine to me, it all looks neat with the exception of that waste pipe which I would possibly replace with some fresh black stuff in line with the guttering.

You are absolutely correct about solid oak doors, I went for oak all round on ours and a few years down the line not one of doors fit 100% all year round. They are a pain and thermally not great either. Suits our old stone house, but you've made the right decision for your modern one.

Thanks for the update to this thread, I've been on the lookout for a new front door for a while and on the basis of the recommendations here I've just asked Rockdoor for a quote.

I'll update this with my own pictures and details if I go ahead.

Rockdoor are the ones to go for, had 3 doors from them now and the quality is fantastic, buy the "Ultimate" though, pointless getting the lower tier ones.

The Ultimate offers the best insulation doesn't it ?

If so that's definitely the one we'll look at as that's the main reason for wanting a new door in the first place.

If you go to the expense of decent locks such as the Avocet ABS, Mul-t-loc Integrator etc splash out on some secure handles too to compliment them.
