'Outrage as police officers armed with huge guns pose with children at Christmas market'

When I was a kid we'd visit London a fair bit just after the peak of the IRA threat and see armed police at stations and near attractions, etc. all the time and no one blinked an eye.

And David Rooke is a ****. Don't get what the issue is. The public will cry out and be up in arms when a terrorist attack happens 'where are the police, where are the army to protect us'
Yet still cry and complain when protection forces are deployed. Knobheads gonna knobhead I guess.

I don't recall that reaction at any previous terror attacks. Do you?

It does glorify guns to some extent but I personally don't think it's anything to set myself, but I'm not a mother.

To all the complainers...

I think it helps humanise the police which is a good thing, we don't want to end up like it in America with us vs them attitude.

A good point.

The them vs us, 'you're a pig, we're people' attitude is stupid and should be avoided. These are people that clock out and go home to their wives and children at the end of the day.

American police seem to hover their fingers over the finger at time and it is unsurprising they get spooked and make the wrong call when they think half the street hates them.

Can you not understand why people might feel unconfutable with this?

There were no overt armed police in town centres during Christmas celebrations in the past. Personally it does not bother me that much but I can understand that there is a sense of loss of innocence. It makes me angry more than anything that it has got to the point where we need this kind of presence. But clearly it is needed as yet more arrests yesterday show.

Its the anti gun brigade having a moan thats all it is.

People who know nothing about firearms getting twitchy at the sight of them.

these officers are very highly trained. unfortunately the uk risk is severe and there is a lot to be said for the carry of firearms as a detterent to incidents against "soft targets".

I can understand why some would feel uncomfortable with armed police around but if anything there wasn't enough of them.

Such is the world we live in, better to be safe than sorry.

I see nothing wrong with it.

The kids most likely wanted to pose for the picture and the parents obviously wanted it so what's the problem?

I'm glad that the Police are approachable and were more than happy to pose for quick picture.

The fact that they have guns really isn't an issue for me. In the current state of the world, I'm happy that the Police are taking precautions.

I just don't think it is this though. I think it's more a case that going to a Christmas market and seeing Santa as a child could have it's magic spoilt when there is an obvious show that a terror threat is hanging over your family.

It is a necessary evil, it's just a sad state of affairs compared to my childhood.

Am I misreading that or are you suggesting allowing the general public to own firearms?
