Let's all go on strike!

So what would you pay a train driver, in charge of the safety of hundreds of people?

£30k?

£25k?

£15k?

Do you want someone with a brain, who can think and react to possible hazards in a timely fashion, possibly preventing accidents... or do you want your trains driven by the cheapest possible driver they can find?

Nothing. Most trains and especially the tube should be automated IMO. I imagine they will be over the coming years.

It's just like those men that used to wind down the barriers at level crossings. Obsolete nowadays.

Yea but fewer people are joining unions, young people have been brainwashed into thinking unions are bad, although some deserve that description, some are really good for both employees and employers.

Not true - union membership increased in 2015 and has been increasing in the private sector for the last 5 years.

Figures are still being collated for 2016 but preliminary stats are shwoing another increase.

Unions are one of the few powers that allow the 'little people' to fight back.

The problem with that is, by and large the people they hurt in their "fighting back" are other "little people".

You know, the normal every day people who can't get to work, don't get their Christmas presents, miss out on their holiday for the year etc...

Southern have been on strike numerous times this year.

Post Office is striking next week.

Argos delivery drivers.

Pilots from British Airways.

Various teacher strikes.

With various companies and sectors doing this, it kinda weakens their argument. We as customers are being penalised, and remember - the customer is always right! Do you guys therefore think that union powers should be decreased? Otherwise, we may as well all go on strike. A general strike!

Have you ever thought to ask yourself why we've reached a point where so many people are so disenfranchised with their employer and working conditions that they feel the need to go on strike?

These strikes wind me up no end. Don't like your job or pay? Advance yourself and get out of it, there's plenty of others that would love to take your place.

Give the jobs to those who need them.

If it was left to people like you, the Health and Safety at Work Act would not exist and Aberfan would be an annual occurrence at a minimum.

It's like people who utter the old chestnut "A union's never done anything for me" and then head off on their annual 2 week holiday in the summer, complete with holiday pay etc.

Do a web search for a graph for UK Coal production over the last 150 years or so.

You will notice that there are a number of sharp dips.

These represent big strikes.

Now look closely. You will notice that after each strike, Coal production rises again, but it never ever again reaches pre-strike production levels.

Each strike has caused permanent and irreparable damage to the industry over all.

The slow decline of the UK coal industry was inevitable for many reasons, But it could have had a much softer landing but for the behaviour of the NUM.

It was the NUM that killed it.

Correlation != causation.

Pilots are due holiday entitlement and a safe place to work also, you know. :)

I know you were joking, but it actually gives an example of a lot of cases where people simply have no interest in why a person would be on strike... they simply think strike? Just get on with your job.

Teachers are a good example:

"They're on strike!!? A decent wage and 6 weeks holiday a year, Pfft... just get on with it..."

Then that person's kid gets sent home from school one day because the roof's caving in and it's not safe, and they start ranting and raving about how it's an outrage... and the teacher says yea we did go on strike about the maintenance program getting cut, but you told us we get great holidays and we should shut up...

This is pathetic, I hope they all get fired.

Striking for a 4.5% pay rise?!!? AWW DIDDUMS, my heart bleeds for these morons.

At least their pay was going up. This is the result of the self entitled generation.

I can see it now, the future where people strike because there are no safe spaces, or striking because the toilets are not gender neutral. Sounds insane right? Well thats the way we are going......

These fools are going to have NO job in the aftermath of Brexit when your economy goes down the toilet. If they had any sense they would be quiet and be grateful for a job.

That's over time, not all at once. That's the cumulative total of what they reckon is needed to keep up with inflation... possibly even with other companies' salaries for similar roles, too.

So cost of living goes up, but your wages shouldn't?
OK, yeah, I can see the sense in that... destabilise other companies' products, because people cannot afford to buy them any more, remove them from the market and kill off their industry, put more people out of work and give yourself a wider choice of workforce who will be utterly delighted to work for thruppence a day, so saving you money and maximising your profit.... no? :p

I suppose we could just put them all on benefits...

Oi, you leave me out of this.

Unfortunately, there are idiots who have no idea what's involved in getting from disgruntled workforce to a day of strike action via ballots and endless legal process. Even a picket line needs to be approached like a military operation these days. The hard of thinking genuinely believe a workforce can strike within an hour of discovering there's no loo roll in the disabled toilet.

You are correct, there are people out there who are happy with their terms and conditions of employment, and those people have got holidays to go on. How dare these airline staff go through all that legal process and exercise their right as an employee in a civilised society. How very dare they.

What winds me up is the unions always say it's a safety issue. But in reality it's usually about ensuring jobs are safe from modernisation and payrises are safe. I'd have far more support for them if they were just honest about it.

Is there a reason why the government don't seem to be all that concerned about all of this?

Done all their shopping / don't have to use a train for the next couple of weeks / not flying on the affected dates.
Take your pick.
I'm sure they'd be kicking off a bit more if they were inconvenienced in any way.
These strikes are just hitting other working people as usual, so there won't be a lot of sympathy.
