HMP Birmingham

I saw the BBC article mentioning this and saw the name 'G4S' which sounded familiar, no links in the BBC article I had so I googled and sure enough they are the same company who botched the Olympics have a string of excessive force claims, racist language against them and especially after the Olympic scandal you would think the Government would distance themselves as much as possible but no. They still award them new contracts because they offer the lowest price, irrespective of the fact they have proven several times to be incapable of doing the roles they are asked to.

Honestly think there is no point caring anymore, the government will always go cheap and manage the collateral damage later.

Sodexo runs prisons worse than G4S, that says a lot.

Private Prisons were always grossly understaffed, even compared to HMPS run establishments.

My wife used to work for Sodexho, far and away the worst company she has ever worked for, completely inept management.

Yeah we had some Sodexo Prison Custardy Officers come to us for some refresher training, they were about as much use in a riot as Custard so the name stuck.

They never got correctly shown during training as their management wanted to do it as cheap as possible - we couldn't' believe it, they all tried but the drills and kit they had were terrible quality and they never knew any better. Management for Sodexo and G4S are totally inept.

It's shameful that we have privatised things like this and allowed them to fail to this extent.

:D i was wondering where the bad typo came from, until i got to the end of your sentence.

I guess things are right on the line now, and it'll only be a matter of time before some guard gets murdered and everything comes to light about inadequate protections, and too many prisoners vs guard, and then G4S gets sued for it. Problem is they'll claim they can't run a prison with those "luxuries" on the budget that they're given.

As another poster previously mentioned, it's a shame we can't 'safely' induce a medical coma for dangerous prisoners.

This ought to be an area where increased automation and surveillance could make a difference.

Why has it got to the point where a prisoner feels comfortable openly threatening a guard like that?

If we had bodycams on all guards threats like that could be recorded and followed up leading to extra months on a sentence.

The hole in a fence and people popping out to pick up drugs?? WTF? This is the sort of stuff that ought to be trivial to prevent. Frankly I don't see why, in the near future, you can't just fit every prisoner with a tracking device perhaps in the form of an ankle tag. Could quite easily take that a step further... get it to monitor things like heart rate and you'll be able to pick up every person using drugs, the time/location they used drugs etc.. and can conduct searches of cells as necessary.

Are you going to pay for it? When you privatise a system it's no wonder things fall apart when the people responsible only have one duty, and thats to extract value for shareholders.

Doesn't necessarily have to cost much more - would probably require some private company to come up with such a system (say in the US) and then that to be brought in. Frankly I'd like to see fewer people locked up for non-violent offences and much tighter control of violent offenders who then run rings around the prison system when inside.

Yes, if necessary, I'd support increasing the budget for prisons. I do think, however, that this is an area that is massively inefficient and the current private sector involvement is just some large companies who just want to cut costs by taking shortcuts and skim a bit off the top. It seems like it ought to be wide open for some innovative company to disrupt the sector a bit to run things in a much more efficient manner.
