Plans for your car 2017.

Replace rear tyres (Quite possibly twice or more)
Upgrade the rear brakes (Possibly another upgrade up front to wilwoods)
Fit an LSD
Couple of visits to Curborough, couple of track days and at least another drag strip visit.
Start properly dealing with rust

Part of me wants more power too, but I'm concerned that will just ruin driveability

What rust does yours have out of curiosity? Sills? Rails? Both?

"Shut up Tom, I don't want to talk about it!" is a valid answer, feel free. :D

Are you running a MK2.5 master cylinder for the brakes? :)

Mine goes in for LOADS....

- Wheels back to metal full refurbishments
- Front and rear grills binned and replaced with gloss black new Audi parts
- Rear bumper off, full repaint (stone chips, small mark and colour matching)
- Both sills fully repainted and treated with stone chip stuff
- Passenger side carbon blade either fixing or replacing after knuckle dragger hit it
- Full geo alignment

Budget......5K :(

That's a lot to spend on a Polo GTi!! :D

For mine (mazda mx5 mk3), I will definitely do the following:

Get new Ohlins suspension wound down slightly and geo setup again (it's a bit too high at the moment although it may settle).

Refit new exhaust so it's not wonky (a garage did a poor job here).

Change ARBs to Eibach items (already bought)

Possibly will look at the following later in the year:

Aluminium coolant expansion tank from Moroso/GWR
Integral Jets carbon fibre canards to match the front lip

Then there's the unlikely wishlist of things I'd like to do but can't afford:

AP Racing front brake kit from blink motorsport
Moto East uprated intake manifold
Corten-miller Rotrex supercharger kit (depending on supporting mods/internals this is 400bhp capable)
Uprated Koyo radiator & singular motorsport bonnet vents

Sills and rear arches, I plated one of the sills as a quick MOT fix in early 2015 but it was only ever a temporary job .

Everything I can see about the larger master cylinder points to more pedal effort and less travel. I'd rather keep as is for better pedal modulation. Even with the extra power on the current upgrades I can't get them to fade on the road

Replace the rear axle beam as the main bushes are on the way out. It's easier and quicker to do a axle swap. I have a replacement I bought off Ebay for £50 delivered and have stripped it down, taken it back to metal, primed it and painted it, fitted polybushes and is ready to go on complete with new bolts and fittings. At the same time I will be doing a rear brake conversion from drums to discs for which I have already got all the parts.

Might be something wrong with my brakes then, they're rubbish. Even after new fluid etc.

See if they'all repair it after I was pulled out on whilst going to my parents....on xmas day!

Else negotiate a cash in lieu settlement to get it repaired, making good all of the last cosmetic bits at the same time. Absolute worst case and they write it off I need to ensure I get a fair price for it and decide what to replace it with!

Oh an pass my motorbike test next Wednesday and get the CBR600F on the road!

If they write it off, buy it back for £150 or whatever similar figure they ask for, and fix it yourself with some of the payout. You'll be quids in, as it were.

True, need to see what's actually damaged though and whether they try and pull my pants down for true value, glass's at ~£3k but the only 540i sport facelifts are up for £10k....I'd take £5k but that's by the by hence the cash in lieu payment to try and salvage as much as possible and keep a CAT C/D marker off the car

Else it may be 3 months in sheds before I can get the mortgage sorted and find something decent/fun!

If they go for 10K and it would cost 10K to replace like for Iike, you fight for 10K
Not 5K! ;)

If thats the case then you push for 10k. If they lowball you, ask them to provide you links to facelift models for that cost.

10k? Come off it guys. Its a fantastic car but it isn't worth 10k. 4-5k is more reasonable.

You must be really boring at parties

If the only ones available on the market are at 10k then you push for 10k... even if you don't get there you always have to chance your arm. After all most policies will replace at "market value" on the hopes of generating a lower payout, on the odd occasions it goes in the other direction, take advantage...

Yeah £10k is not going to happen - they are really trying it on for both of those at £10k, that's M5 money!

The car owes me ~£5k but would struggle to find one in similar mechanical condition for the cash (in last 3 years had all cooling, suspension, gearbox rebuild, alternator/battery, tyres are 3 months old and had new disc's and pads recently too) but of course they'll not pay out for that.

Stop being a realist negative and push your luck ;)

Example, we had a leak in our kitchen from a faulty pipe into the house, by the time we noticed 2 units were totally ruined, and the soak through the wall effected the wallpaper in the hallway. Insurance wanted to pay £50 for some new wallpaper rolls and £300 for 2 new units.

After we pointed out the units were 7 years old, and no longer available, as well as the wallpaper for the hallway being no longer printed, we got a payout for several thousand for a complete kitchen replacement and £500 for redecorating the hall stairs and landing.

Indeed - there are far more factors than it just being a facelift car etc

Ultimately I have zero insurer sympathy so get as much as you possibly can for it and if there are similar cars being offered for £10k then by all means try, but the trade valuation (which they tend to try first) will be so far detached it'll be a laughable achievement. Plus I also came across an e39 530i touring with around 60k at an asking price of £11k which is just....Lol
