Potential new car - BMW 116i M Sport

I had a 116i as a courtesy car once and I was very impressed with it. It felt like it had way more power than I expected it to and never felt breathless.

The only issue is spending £14k on a car you won't drive much

Make sure you're happy with the size of the 1 series - even though the revised car is quite a bit better for space the boot still isn't the biggest and you might find your baby gubbins alone fill it (though I guess you're probably moving onto a buggy rather than full size pram etc).

Another thing to check is whether the next size car seat will allow you to have the passenger seat back sufficiently far for someone to be comfortable if it's your only car

Other than that they're decent if you can find one relatively well specced. As above I'd try for a 118i but in all honesty if you're someone not overly fussed by power the 116 will likely be adequate.

You have a baby? Careful, half the folks posting in here recently will claim a q5 or x3 is too small and you need a small bus.
Otherwise the 116i is perfectly fine but a 118i or even 120i would be a nicer option. Failing that and if you don't drive much a focus would be a cheaper option or one that would get you a lot more for your money.

Is the 120i just the same again with yet more tuning?

The 120i is a 2.0 engine, but doesn't exist in the 2nd gen 1 series from what I can see, whereas it was was continued in the 1st gen coupe/convertible style through to 2013.

No doubt someone with more BMW knowledge will be able to confirm or correct me :)

I'd go for a higher spec car without a premium badge tbh.

probably a mazda 3 or something with a decent amount of kit

I have a 116i and its slooooooooooooow, you have to rev the **** off it to get it to go anywhere. Also like most BMWs it has a thirst for oil and MPG is low-mid 30s. Handles nice but its soooo under powered its not overly enjoyable to drive. The standard BMW sound system is awful. Small fuel tank becomes irritating after a while, mine came on run flats that are £104ish each, not the quietest and run flats can be a bit slippy in the wet.

I cant recommend.

Tows my little caravan though so they are not all bad.

What with having a young family, I'd probably look to get something bigger than the 1-series/A3/Golf/Focus, and potentially look at the mid-sized estates (A4/3 series/Passat/etc).

You don't however appear to have any desired age/spec/mileage stipulations, so it's hard to suggest specific vehicles.

Irrelevant, your's isn't the turbocharged 116i, and is a completely different kettle of fish to the proposed 116i.

2-3 years old
5 door
1.6 Ltr+ engine size
Must be able to have a tow bar fixed
~12k miles per year mileage
petrol
manual
~£14k budget

What has your previous generation 116i got to do with the one he wants to buy?

Edit: as per the last post.

Forgive me for not reading the post properly

no it isn't, no need to exaggerate - they're fast enough for daily commuting and aren't at all bad looking with the M sport trim.

OP - 116i or 118i

I am not exaggerating, my variation, not the one the OP is after is tripe, I bought it because the wife loved it, on a test drive with the salesman in the back it seemed nice enough. I could have got a top spec Focus or a decent Civic for the same money.

DO NOT BUY MY VERSION OF THIS CAR

My face when my wife insists I take her out in the old E87 116i 1.6 NA and not my Transit van
