RMT to ballot for strike action.

maybe we should have a public referendum

whether to go for substantial investment to move towards automated train, tube services - I'd vote for it :)

**** this. **** these train companies. Thieving ***** *****. I'm buying a scooter, not a penny more will these useless excuses of companies see from me.

Imagine if you had to get southern in to London and then a tube to work. Your life would be hell.

I've been on the tube as a non-Londoner many times and have never needed to use a ticket office. That's what they invented ticket machines for so you don't need to speak to a grumpy ticket man in a dead end job....

You can even change the language on them can't you?

There are normally loads of staff in stations that the tourists use. I really don't see what the problem is.

As for Southern they operate the same system on my train line to work that southern are striking about. It runs perfectly fine and there are no safety issues. The trains are dispatched by staff on the platform and it works perfectly fine. The trains so crowded and your packed in like sardines exactly the same as southern.

Oh, my first tube strike as a Londoner - how exciting. Do they just walk out at 6pm on the dot? I.e. if I start my 10-15 minute journey home around 5.30pm will I be ok? Apart from being crushed by the thousands of other people who had the same idea.

I probably wouldn't leave much later than 5pm just to be safe. If it was a work day when it's starting at 6pm most people would just leave 4pm ish to be sure, for example.

No, they don't just walk out. People starting new shifts won't turn up though. You're usually OK for a couple of hours after the official start but it's a little risky.

I'm going to Spurs vs Aston Villa on Sunday. The game will probably finish just before 6pm. I reckon that I'll be able to get home just fine but I've probably damned myself by putting that in writing. :p

Strike starts at 6pm Sunday until end of service (00:30) Monday night.

If your Monday tube commute features a Zone 1 station, you are SOL.

Does anybody calling for full automation of the entire system genuinely believe that it's possible? As in possible to get to a point where there is no reliance at any part of the system on people who may go on strike?

Because it's not just driving of trains that you'd need to automate - even the DLR needs supervisors on board, if they aren't there then the service doesn't run.

Chaps, in Lon on Monday.. if I get there for 7:15 will I be able to secure an Uber?

Last time I was in London during a tube strike I just jumped on a Boris bike - they usually have more in service during a strike and they relax the drop off restrictions a bit as well. Should be plenty of bikes avail at that time.

Won't Uber be surge charging at that time as it will be very busy? Likely to be expensive and the roads will be jammed. If it's only a mile or two then I'd walk. Also consider the riverboat although that will be busy too of course.

I am working from home if it goes ahead. Appreciate that not everybody can do that, but we need to get more serious as a society about home working.

Of course this requires houses large enough to have space to do that.

I work from home quite often due to childcare. I far prefer being in the office and I find I'm more productive because of the work environment there. However most of my team are in various parts of the world so even if I was in work I'd be on the phone/email/instant chat/screen sharing with them anyway. Working from home is a nice option to have.
