Upgrade to RX480 4GB or 8GB?

That's the thing, if a £190 4GB card gives 95% of the performance of that £250 one, that's a bad value upgrade.

Memory usage no longer goes hand in hand with performance increases, Due to the lack of grunt on console gpus the games developers use high definition textures to make their games look prettier, The high def textures take up a lot of memory while requiring minimal grunt to run them.

So it makes sense to buy the 8 gb model which will also sell easier than the 4gb model will on the secondhand market in a couple of years time.

Don't bother with 8GB, since 1080p/1440p it isn't as important, you can get 4GB 480s almost as cheap as 470s. But if there's amazing offers on 8GB 480s then go for it.

Just Went for the XFX RX 480 RS Edition 4096MB

Can't really see any appreciable difference between the RS and GTR?

Willing to risk the lack of additional VRAM for a £50 saving, by the time I need it I'll be upgrading again I reckon. Considering my current card has 1GB I think I'll be ok :P

Unless there's less than thirty quid in it, I'd go 4GB. Maybe the 8GB will be significantly better in the long run. Maybe it won't. It seems unlikely it will have a vastly longer shelf life either way. At most, the 4GB might need the textures turned down a notch vs the 8GB. The card will still wind up outdated around the same time, and will still be worth about the same used two years down the line.

30 quid ... over 2 years ... as in less than £2 / month ... talk about being short sighted :)

I read an article on the net last year sometime where AMD said it costs them an additional $30 for the extra 4GB VRAM to make 8GB.. that isnt £55 now is it ;)

@OP My 4GB 480 did BF1 Beta maxed out Ultra settings @ 1080p at 90-100fps average and used 3.4GB of VRAM.. you'll be fine :)

For 1080p 4gb is still plenty. Most games even at max at 1080p only use around 3gb.

There is a few exceptions like hyper textures in mirrors edge, rise of the tomb raider max textures however I cant even see the difference from ultra in screenshots so seems pointless :D

ROTTR using maximum settings you can quite easily see the differences when swapping resolutions and even maxed @2160p things like leaves could do with even more MSAA if it was available.

You know... they could have avoided that when making the asset simply by bevelling that edge a little.
