AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

Boohoo, some people get loud/broken samples, doesn't change basic facts. Look up any review, the Fury X was significantly quieter than every other reference card available, simple as that. If it required an AIO to be cooled well, it would have run at 85-90C with the AIO thus showing it would run above that with an air cooler. Running at 50C load with an AIO and 65-70C on a Fury non X with air, doesn't denote the need for watercooling/AIO. Watercooling/AIO is an option that AMD chose to put on the Fury X nothing more or less.

32dba loud compared to 42dba for a 980ti. 10dba equates to just over 2 times the noise iirc, 10 times the noise power but 2 and a bit times the perceived noise level.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/9390/the-amd-radeon-r9-fury-x-review/25

43dba vs 51dba for the 980ti (keep in mind different noise testing equipment, different rooms tested in and different distances from the card tested. The key is consistency between tests on the same site and difference between the cards in any giving testing situation. Saying the card is loud is simply ignoring all evidence. People got dodgy pumps due to a production issue on MSI (IIRC) pumps but afaik was fixed and replacements were available for those who wanted them. The card itself is significantly quieter while running 20-30C cooler than the 980ti depending on the review.

...

I have to completely disagree with you on the noise factor, unless you had one and experience it yourself just refering to dB numbers here is pointless. The AOI pump noise was just unbearable for anyone who is into quiet/discreet system, which was one the strong point of the card marketed at the time.

I agree that dB wise the card itself could give a good picture, the fan was indeed quiet, but the constant high pitch noise was completely unacceptable for such as premium product.

I also hated how AMD tried to minimize the problem afterward, saying only a small batch was affected when clearly it was a widely spread issue. Trust me I tried and gave the product a chance, I bought 4 different Fury X from 4 different brands over a 3 months period and they all had that pump noise issue.

For that reason alone I personally consider the Fury X one of the worst product AMD ever released.

I have the Fury X, it's damn near silent. The loudest thing in my system is FX and my HDD

It compares to an HDD working it's butt off on noise; where as the rest of my system is Noctua fans at 800-900prm.
Does the job, and is far quieter than the previous cards I owned.

That means you are lucky owner of a "good" Fury X Sir, which I do not deny exist.
What I am saying is that noise wise the card was flawed due to unacceptable quality control when you're selling a high-end premium product.

Whatever final design VEGA will turn to use I certainly hope that AMD have learned their lesson and there will be no disappointment from that perspective on release day (whether it's cooling/power/VRM/... related)

To solve that they should just allow 3rd party coolers from launch day.

Yup didn't even seem like Raja himself knew how it would perform in most games; think AMD's focus is elsewhere (the big deal with Google etc. has probably got them thinking about AI more than anything else).

TBH I think they might have got burnt a bit by the actual production run of Polaris versus development samples (which based on reading between the lines performed more like expected for 14LPP) and now being a bit more wary.

That's more to do with your impatience, We knew straight away that the first batches had pump issues and the smart move would have been to wait for the fixed ones, I did at first but then my own impatience kicked in and after 4 or 5 weeks I got tired of waiting for the fixed models and ended up buying a Fury pro which has been one of the nicest cards I've ever owned, Rather than buy one card after another you should have just waited, it was clear that it was an issue with all brands because it was not a component that changed from brand to brand they all used the same coolermaster pump so obviously they are all going to have the fault. One or two people reported not having it but the odds on getting one was so low that it wasn't worth the risk.

I returned about 4 Xs, the whine was horrendous, but they didn't need the AIO, they just put them on, as they were the start of their own Titan range of cards (which also don't allow custom coolers).

R390 user here, probably looking to splash some cash on Vega when it finally launches, :D been a bit of a lurker in this thread, popped in for odd read but not fully up to speed with it all.

Am I right in saying that this will be the 5xx range of cards?
I have a freesync 27" 1440 monitor, and not yet looking to go 4k, so a decent upgrade would be to go to a 580?

No one knows anything yet, unfortunately, a bit more of a wait.

Did you read the part of my message where I say 3 months? :o
My last attempt/ purchase was actually close to 4 months after launch, I wouldn't call that impatience...

They can and they should. Their reference coolers haven't been great since the 5870 I think.

It can only help them with good reviews and press on launch as well.

Even better follow the plan as with Grenada and don't have reference cards only aftermarket models.

The Grenada chips actually ran hotter than Hawaii but without the week reference cooler to show that it's not been a big issue and it's not what people will remember about the 390 & 390x.

So just lots of speculation at the moment?
And does the H1 in 2017 H1 mean 1st half of the year?
So we could be waiting till June / July before launch?
Speculation and manure mostly and you can thank sites like WCCF for a lot of that.

Sadly it sounds like some distributors where still pushing dodgy models out the door if it was still going on 4 months later, Presumably not from here though or was it?
I waited about 5 or 6 weeks before giving up and grabbing one of the overclocked Tri-x models before they were all gone.
