London Pollution

Its kind of self-defeating with things like the London Marathon, where the point is that it's supposed to be a healthy thing to do.

Though all you end up doing is smoking several packets of cigarettes - figuratively.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the health benefit derived from walking and cycling in a city basically always outweigh the negative impact of poor air quality.

In fact, after a quick Google, here's an article reporting the research that I must be thinking of: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-36208003

Yeah I hated taking the central line to work - as Raymond Lin said after work a quick wipe if the inside of your nostrils yielded black tissues :(

Really glad I now have the option to work in Reading and sometimes even Oxford / Winchester as hate commuting into Westminster!!

It doesn't really solve the problem. It mitigates in a limited manner. Solving it would be getting rid of the pollution.

It prevents our running friend from harm while training. Removing the pollution is going to take a while.

Unless the Mayor has the stones and the backing to ban all non-DPF'd diesel engines and non-catalysing petrol engines from inside the M25.

I use Jubilee and have zero problems. I have had this issue on other lines though. Jubilee never had steam trains down it and so the tunnels aren't blackened from the smoke.

Whenever I have had to visit offices in London I have been able to feel / taste the pollution in the air as soon as I've got off the train. Very noticeable when you live in the sticks. Makes me sneezy and yes lots of black soot in the hose. Horrible.

I live on the South Coast and have done for 20+ years, going into a city like that the difference is instantly noticeable.

I live in a small town on the south coast with lots of trees etc but don't notice it very often. The main things tend to be later on e.g. discoloured mucus, sometimes a bit of a funny throat but you never know if that is just germs or whatever. I don't really get off the train and get hit by it, occasionally when walking around down I might feel like I can smell diesel fumes or whatever.

My suspicion is that action plans will be too slow to implement and eventually there will be some sort of panic solution. There is fear of a backlash from diesel drivers if they were hit hard by bans or massive congestion charges but perhaps that is something that will need to be approached sooner rather than later (i.e. skip the gentle phasing in).

I noticed a strange thing over the weekend - we went out for a stroll around london, we were both wearing brand new clothes.. A few hours later when we got back, whilst we were taking our shoes off I could smell smoke, like i'd been in a bar or at a bonfire - my friend noticed it too.. We hadn't been anywhere near smokers or fires.

The same thing happened again today, went out for a walk with clean fresh clothes, came back stinking of smoke.... we concluded it must be pollution..

Anyone else noticed this?? It's a bit worrying as I'm thinking of moving back to London in the next 6 months or so...

Not in London but noticed it around here this evening. Its very foggy and very cold and its probably the same atmospheric condtions that caused the London smog's of the '40's. Inverted air layers where smoke mixes with fog and doesn't disperse. At least thats my theory.

A bad throat is usually a symptom I get from the pollution as well. Going back home is like using an oxygen mask after spending time in London, even though I live in the suburb of another town.

It's in the news? So what? The government don't care, and people still want to sit on their own in their diesel car not caring that they're poisoning themselves and everyone around them.

Government do care else we would not have congestion charge, £10 an hour parking, permit holders only parking etc.

The problem is not the average joe driving, its the amazon deliveries etc. more people are getting stuff delivered so more vans in the road

Most people commute by bus/train now mate.

i cycle
