I have a spare Samsung 830 SSD which I would like to install in a laptop. I would like to Secure erase the SSD first.

Can I do this by connecting the ssd via 'sata to usb' to my desktop and then use a program in windows to do the secure erase?

I always used Parted Magic from UBCD. It's not from within Windows as you would prefer, but you can easily make a USB stick with UBCD on it.

Yeah just hook the drive up and format it, and if more secure wipe is needed, Ccleaner has a blank space cleaning tool so you can do 1, 3 or more overwrites across the whole drive.

use the secure erase option in the Samsung magician software, allows you to create a USB stuck to boot from and then secure erase

Really bad idea to apply mechanical HD secure erase techniques to an SSD. They don't work and also shorten the SSD's life.

My 840 EVO has a 80TB write limit, doing a full write of the drive like that twice is only going to touch 0.24TB of that limit, I wouldn't mind doing it myself considering over the 3+ years I've owned the drive I have written about 12TB to it.

I always secure erase my ssd's before restoring a backup or doing a fresh install. I have always done this since buying my first ssd that was 90gb for a crazy price of £150:eek:

fyi i once accidently formatted a ssd, couldnt recover any data from it, maybe things are better now but normal quick format seemed pretty darn effective to me
