Cyclist runs red light, hit by car....

To be fair so many of them invite it, I witness a disproportionate number that ride like utter idiots everyday. Overtaking a bus on the inside while it's turning, cutting across in front of me, diving through a rapidly closing gap forcing me to brake and throw my passengers around. If I hit them it's game over, if I am looking in my mirror when they act like a fool likewise.

Yes but just as many drivers do the same thing, one thing I always keep in mind while driving is if a cyclists causes an accident he's going to be worse off. I don't personally find cyclists at all annoying and I drive around probably the busiest city in UK when it comes to cycling. There have a been a few bad pieces of cycling over the time but there have been just as many if not more of driving, reality is that every group of road users has bad apples in them. Be it cyclists, drivers, bikers or pedestrians. Cyclists sadly have no training which I agree should be done to increase awareness of buses, lorries etc but then again, they are not in charge of a machine capable of crazy speeds that weights over a tone either. Any mistake cyclist does, it'll hurt them more than any driver.

I cycle to work daily, I drive through central London etc often too so I believe I have a decent amount of exposure when it comes to both sides. I shake my head often when I see cyclist pull crazy manuevers and I do the same with drivers. The number of near death experiences I had over 20k+ miles cycling in London is hard to count..

There are cyclists who never drive so they have no idea what their actions do and the same goes to drivers, it's a shame as IMO cycling a week in busy city would change many drivers POV. I believe there have been some training happening from bigger transport companies where they made the drivers take on the bikes, an their opinions about cycling have changed.

I'm not attempting to say that the cyclists was innocent, no way, I'm sure he was the main reason for the accident but cut the hate. It's per individual basis, you can't say every cyclists sucks and should be off the road, the same way you can't say every driver should be banned and off the road.

I am a cyclist and motorcyclist as well. I was riding 3 miles each way to school from age 11 and I never once had an accident because I looked after my own safety. 100% agree on the drivers aspect, and both seem to have a current habit of using their mobile phones while driving/riding. None of them seem to have any idea of why Buses are regarded as vulnerable road users because they don't think anything of forcing us to brake so they can save a few seconds and get out in front of us. Argh I am ranting, sorry.

Deliveroo riders seem to have no sense whatsoever in Bath, it is only going to be so long before one of them is killed or suffers life changing injuries.

As a driver I always give cyclists room and have to plan overtakes very carefully when on service to ensure both the cyclist and my passengers are safe and comfortable, but the number of cyclists that just suddenly swerve across in front of me to turn right with no signal or look over the shoulder is staggering, if they did this when I had started to overtake, well, road burger doesn't even begin to describe the end result.

There desperately needs to be some for of compulsory cycling test to ride on the road, as right now it is a free for all, and yes I agree, those that ride responsibly, hi-viz, lights at night, look before signalling and moving, I have no problem with them, I have no problem with them moving back to the front at the lights after I have spent 5 minutes trying to get past as those are the ones that respect the lights and rules, we need more like them.

I hate cyclists and I'm a cyclist commuter however just before Christmas I bought a headcam so it could stop the arguments with motorists.
On Wednesday I was cycling at 28 mph down an estate road with cars parked either side so I also had to keep that distance so drivers/passengers don't open their doors on me (happened many times). This left very little room for anything to get past me but this ***** decided he's going to overtake me forcing me over into that danger zone but as soon as he got past he had to brake because the end of the road was upon him. He wound down his window having a right go at me when (I know, I didn't want to turn into this person) I pointed at the head cam and he shut right up.
I now have quite a collection of left hooks, cars getting as close as they can, cars just pulling out on me and so on but I'm not going to start a You Tube channel (yet).
I find it weird that in 5 years of commuting it's always been cars, no white vans, no lorries, just cars.

Lost count of the number of cyclists that just exited a traffic light controlled junction at full speed hoping to merge with traffic at 30mph.

The other one is cycling straight off the pavement at an angle into a lane with traffic at speed.

I appreciate that stopping and starting is tiring on a bike, but I'm amazed we have so few cycling related deaths in the UK. Fortunately that's because drivers now expect these things to happen. I would hate to be a bus or HGV driver in London.

And if you cycled regularly you'd almost certainly see a disproportionate number of idiot motorists as well. Ignoring reds, speeding up at ambers to get through before he light "changes", not checking side streets/paths before driving at full speed into them, passing way too close, pulling into gaps that are way too small for them etc etc.

I am sure if you read my other posts you would see I drive a bus and see a massive amount of appalling car drivers as well. Well worth reading before you jump in an attempt to try and correct me ;) However, I used the phrase disproportionate as I see a higher percentage of car drivers that do follow the rules than cyclists. I work nights and I will see about 2 cars a night with no lights, I can see up to 10 cyclists with no lights wearing dark clothes. I see maybe 1-2 cars take a set of lights too late, I see dozens of cyclists jump red lights.

Drivers suffer badly with forward planning and observation, cyclists suffer more with blatant and deliberate rule breaking with the exception of speeding where car drivers clearly have the edge.

I was exiting the bus station at a light controlled T junction this week, a deliveroo rider jumped the lights coming from the left of me, cut right across the front of me and take the pavement to my right. He was literally inches from death, and bar my good observation, would have been!

A friend of mine had something similar happen. Some scrote on a mountain bike came barrelling of a side alleyway and straight into the road. My mate had no chance of stopping because this idiot just appeared about 3' in front of his car. The police who arrived on scene treated my mate as if he'd just drop kicked a newborn into a yard full of hungry pitbulls. It's never the cyclist's fault, it's always the evil car driver.

I had this experience on my driving test of all things - I had to pull over double white lines on the exit from a roundabout to avoid - totally nothing I could have done other than driving at like 5mph to avoid it and he was an inch from serious injury. Fortunately my examiner was sympathetic and put it down as a minor he could very easily have failed me because of it even though it wasn't my fault.

Shouldn't have even been a minor as you're allowed cross double white lines in an emergency. Examiner must have thought you had other options such as reacting quicker and braking harder.

Can confirm this and see it most days. Two went flying out from a junction they're meant to give way to me in and straight through two sets of red lights (Southgate)

Reasoning he gave was that I didn't check what was coming the other way before maneuvering - but there was absolutely no chance of avoiding it by braking and I challenge anyone to have reacted quicker :p it was the peak of my competitive video gaming days and not a situation that could have been avoided by anticipation or better awareness.

Play some more RTS or MMORPGS then, you should have been keeping track of every visible object and the velocity it was going already :D

As per the post I originally quoted the very first moment of possible visibility he was about 3 feet away (basically width of the pavement was only visibility) and travelling well in excess of 20mph :s

Examiner seemed to be of the opinion that without the ability to check what was coming the other way I should have held my position even though it would have resulted in (not of my fault) injury.

Southgate Bath? That's where I almost got one!

I nearly took one out pulling out of Southgate car park. Lights were green for us coming out of the car park and one flew right across the front of me and the car next to me and then went left towards the station. Also saw one of the guys giving a car a load of verbal at the lights at the top of Broad street once, that was quite amusing to watch.

It's weird, I've never had a problem with cyclists while driving but I've had a few incidents with cyclists while cycling.
I've had a couple who have seen me coming up behind and they start weaving all over the road so I can't get past but eventually I do.
The funniest one was a while I was cycling on a path with a lot of pedestrians so I slowed down to a reasonable speed, I then had to go to the left to avoid a couple and when I did that a cyclist who was unkowingly trying to undertake me, hit me and went flying off into a fence.
All the pedestrians behind started cheering because he must have been cycling dangerously.

The percentage of idiot cyclists is probably the same as idiot motorists. But what I don't understand about the idiot cyclists is that one small mistake could cost you severely so why aren't they more careful?
