Are you proud to be British / European?

I'm not proud to be British, nor European.
I'm not proud of either's history.
I'm not proud of my existence or anything that i have achieved.
I'm not proud, generally, of the human race.
I am however, proud of some individual's actions in life. Those usually selfless to what I deem a good cause.

Fair enough. Some people have done some amazing things. I really look up to people who spend their whole lives working for charities for instance even though they could get paid way more money working for a company. Those people are worthy of immense respect. I'd love to do some charity work but I'm not sure I have many skills I could offer unless they want a computer scientist for some reason.

Ever thought about volunteering? I volunteer for AGE UK as an IT teacher. Been doing it for over 6 years and it's fun and very rewarding. Nothing better than seeing the joy on somebody's face when you fix a problem they have with their laptop or camera, phone, printer or whatever they bring. I really enjoy it.

I'd love to but the problem is I suffer from agoraphobia so I can't really leave the house. I can help if it is something that is done over the phone or the internet but if it means leaving the house I'm a bit stuck.

Sorry to hear that. That must suck. My schizophrenia prevents me from leaving the house on rare occasions and that winds me up no end but being agoraphobic must be a nightmare.

I identify as British because I am a product of British culture, for better or worse. I don't feel 'proud' to be British because I didn't do anything to become British so I don't see what there is to be proud of.

I like living in the largely prosperous, tolerant and safe Europe, however much it is going through a bit of a rough patch.

Very thankful to be born here and very proud of the achievements of Brits who have gone before me. There is no better place to live than Western Europe in my opinion.

I wouldn't use the word proud. It feels odd being proud about the achievements of others.

I'm certainly very thankful to have been born in a rich western democracy though.

I am not proud of the achievements of others that are not mine nor will i claim i have anything to do with their success if i haven't. I am proud of traits of which people associate with the people of my countries but only those which i share.

Being proud of what someone else did 400 years ago just because you were born within the same land mass, is imo sillier than saying 'we beat you' or 'we won the cup/league' when you are just a supporter.

No. Couldn't give a monkeys.

I see no sense in being proud of something I happen to be completely by chance. Nor of historic events that I am linked to completely by chance.

Impressed by the heritage of the country I live in? Sure. Do I keep that heritage and history in mind and enjoy what it has to offer? Sure.

Proud? No, why should I be?

It's rare that I agree with forum member wedrum and not only because he has awful opinions which he posts on my internet. However, in this instance I agree with him. I'm not proud to be British - or European for that matter - but that does not mean that I dislike either.

It's the word 'proud' I have an issue with.

I don't think proud is the correct word. Proud is for something you have achieved, my parent's deciding where I was born and grew up isn't exactly something I have achieved myself. I always support Wales and Team GB in sports and do like where I live but i'm not proud of it.
