Hi,

Can anyone please advise me how to resolve a missing space issue with an Hitachi 3tb HDD? The drive is only showing up with 746.52gb capacity in windows 7 and also the same in a diskpart/list disk command prompt from a USB boot stick.

I have tried a couple of fixes such as installing the Intel RST driver (v11) and also deleting all partitions using gparted via a boot CD. However, none of these fixes have worked.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Is it plugged directly in to the mainboard or via some other way, usb etc?

It is a 3.5" internal HDD and is plugged directly into the main board (MSI P67 board). I have also checked in another motherboard (X58) and have the same issue of missing capacity.

Format as GPT in diskpart :)

Is there a command line switch that I use in diskpart to format as GPT?

If I use diskpart to clean all the drive, ie, deleta all partitions it is still only showing as 746gb before formatting. Are you saying that even if it is showing as 746gb unformatted it will revert to 3tb after a gpt format?

Thx

Update:

I tried the conversion to GPT using a Windows USB boot stick using the command sequence

diskpart
list disk
select disk (selected 746gb HDD)
clean all
convert gpt
exit

Rebooted the computer, the drive is still showing as 746gb. It seems to be in a locked state?

See if there is a bios update, I remember reading some were when 3TB drives came out that some mobo's could not see the full capacity. 2TB drives were fine.

The two boards (x58 & P67) I have checked the HDD in are both showing other 3tb drives to their correct capacity, its just this particular HDD that is not showing to its full capacity.

I have a X58 board with a external 3TB HDD which i use for backups and i have no issues seeing the full space.

how old is the HDD?

I can't think of anything else to help, but can you post a screen shot showing the drive in Disk Manager?
