4790k overclocking.

I think you have found the 24/7 limits of that chip if it proves long term stable. volts and temps are fine, but I personally wouldn't want either much higher.
My experience of using realbench with my 4790k is that I can pass hours of it, yet GTA V crashes and requires a few more notches of vcore
4.8GHz at that vcore is a decent result. Probably average for the later batches, good for the early batches.

i have dropped down to 4.7Ghz as i was able to get vcore down to 1.279V, i feel the drop on volts is worth the 100mhz drop in core speed.
my CPU is unstable with XMP enabled at any core speed other than stock, however i am running 4 sticks of ram and this can be taxing on a IMC

I'm interested in this thread as just bought a 4790K. Got a cheapish cooler (Saphire) and monitored temps whilst running 3D Mark Firestrike at stock. Cores hitting around 62 already so assume need something a little beefier to get a decent oc like an AIO?

AIO coolers and no better than a good air cooler, they just cost a hell of a lot more and in my case have alwasy made more noise. my current CPU cooler is this https://www.overclockers.co.uk/alpenfoehn-brocken-2-cpu-cooler-hs-041-al.html
the cooler can be had from bgrade for £20. mine was a b grade cooler and was boxed as new fantastic cooler and well worth £20.

Yeah 4.8 is decent, im using it for day to day use. I found GTA is great for stress testing, when everything else is stable GTA can still crash and needs a little extra vcore, if your using as custom loop its even more obvious as the loop heats up GPUs and CPU can become unstable if theyre right on the edge already.

Anyone got some settings to aim for without going nuts, like 4.4 or 4.5?

Got a Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 7 and a decentish cooler, though it will be my next upgrade along with a gpu at some point.

Ta.

Well 4.4 is stock boost on the 4790 if I'm not mistaken. What I done was found out stock volts and using offset voltage was able to tweak it down slightly which reduced temps a bit. Think my old air cooler is struggling with the 4790 so I'll be getting a new one or AIO before I try OC further.

Thats is a very good point. To be fair, it cruises through games even at stock, though I only really play BF1. It is nuts how much better it is than the 8320e I had before, even at the same clocks. Great second hand upgrade and my GPU, a 390 is now the thing holding the frames back. Gettign around 90-100 but as I have a 120hz monitor, would like to see 120 on high settings all the time.

I think 44 turbo is just for one core, i think its 40 for all four cores in use, but if you manually switch the ration from auto to 44 then it will use it for all the cores, ya should need any other changes for that really and youll gain a 10% boost when all the cores are going so its probably worth it.
