Anyone fallen out with their phone?

Not with my phone - But with Social Media - I've cut out my use of the likes of Facebook, Twitter etc.

Reddit is my current time sink with regards to my phone :p

I don't use social media any more (except being advised to get onto LinkedIn in order to move on from my job) and I have about a third of the amount of 'Apps' that I used to.

The smart phone "buzz" has thoroughly worn off for me. It's just a tool, but the lack of convenience would be a massive shock if I didn't have one now.

Not that I am glued to my phone or Facebook particularly much, but this thread just gave me the push I needed to close my Facebook account.

Main time sink on my phone is our lads Whatsapp group, which is used most days.

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about getting a 'dumb' phone. Just something that isn't flag ship. It's probably easier right now to just remove the distractions from my phone.

Having so much information at your finger tips is pretty addictive.

Mainly use mine for Kindle, Sat-nav and music streaming in the car, dont do any of the social media stuff.

I seldom upgrade my phone to the latest and greatest these days. Not willing to pay a premium price for it. I don't use social media - but what I do use is maps and travel information, and information seeking, as well as diaries and email - so useful for that and planning life etc.. My phone is my only camera as well, so the only thing I "get" about having a top rated phone, is one with a good camera. I like taking pictures, so that is an important feature for me.

However, I also, shock horror, use my phone as a communication device!! It's what I use it for 75% of the time (the rest is mainly pictures, and email/diary, maps and looking stuff up). I have a couple of games on it to play on the commute, but generally I read a book.

For buying stuff or doing anything online, I use a PC, be it flights/holidays, tools, food whatever, I use a PC. I can't see myself ever using my mobile to do that. A mobile phone is a useful companion, but not essential.

So I totally agree Lie - I don't see the point is spending a lot on a top model phone.

Pretty much at the point where unless it goes off I rarely pick it up and use it now. If wasn't for the usefulness of the 'smart' features I could happily drop back to pre smart phone days.

I was one for upgrading every new version but I've had my current phone 3 years and it's still working fine, I can't justify upgrading anymore for a slightly bigger screen and removal of features.

I'd love to bin off my phone and go back to an old Nokia 3310 style phone.

But...I'm too nosey and too dependant on it now, I'm in too deep. I'm a lost cause

What I mean - have you decided to reduce the amount of time you spend on your phone? I'm finding myself on my phone a fair amount browsing this and that, wasting time. I'm curious to see if others have taken steps to reduce the time on their phones ?

I know this is a tech forum and most will not give a second thought to their usage.

I have considered downgrading from a flag ship phone to something more basic to remove the constant distraction.

Just bin the app you spend most time on and job done. Use a PC instead. It takes time and you don't find yourself checking your phone every 10 mins for an update like all the other little drones out there.

I'm 25 and therefore part of the true 'smartphone generation'.

Whilst I love my phone and would never consider a downgrade, I can happily go without it for hours during spare time. A lot of people my age are terrible for it though. It's the one thing me and my lady friend have had a 'heated discussion' about. It's so rude when your trying to have a conversation or watch a movie and your acquaintance is messing about on there phone for 10-20 mins at a time.

I don't use the social media apps. If I need to look at them I use their websites and I turn off notifications from them all.
I use whatsapp as messaging, but I opt out of any groups that become chatty.
All non essential email (like forums etc) goes to a seperate folder, that doesn't appear in notifications.
No games on the phone. Unless I knew I was going to hanging around for a long time. Then I might install a few time killers.

I tend to use Pushbullet to receive notifications on my desktop when at work, I then treat them like I do my emails. You can reply from within the pushbullet browser extensions. It is a lot more time efficient. You can chose which notifications get forwarded to pushbullet clients.

I'll check social media on my phone a few times a day, only a few minutes usually though, or if I'm on the toilet so don't really consider that a problem. My worst habit is browsing in bed meaning I don't go to sleep until / get up later than I should. Really should do something about that, can't see it happening anytime soon though.

The only time I feel I am wasting time on my phone is when I sit trawling through social media looking at all the pointless updates or lack of them from the last hour since my previous check.

I use a lot of other stuff on the phone and a lot of it for communication purposes such as FB messenger, whatsapp, standard messaging, emails etc. Also as many others have said, such things as GPS and looking up something specific when out and amount (ie nearest shop for x,y,z).

I feel that there's no need to downgrade specifically just learn self control.

Maybe remove social media apps from the phone and limit them to a laptop/tablet. Also limit games or remove them as well, I could save a lot of wasted time by doing this! If its not there you cant use it.

Sometimes you have to learn self control just to maintain having the other useful stuff i.e. don't play games or log in to social media as much, so you can maintain flagship phones good features and don't upgrade every new model, do it every other or every 3. A decent flagship phone will easily last 3+ years, is paying a "premium" really that much of a premium when it spans such a long period of time?

lol, i am the same, PC usage and forums etc are used a lot as i work on a PC all day long and when im home im doing the same.

Phone while home gets stuck on the side and left, weekends are the same, phone gets put somewhere and then left till Monday.

Because I don't really use my phone I found a great APP about a month ago called Sidesync.
When I get home I can either use USB or WiFi and I see a visual window of the lockscreen on my phone and I get alerts popping up on my desktop - it's brilliant.
I can also control the phone from the window.
