I`m try to hold off on the full PC upgrade as not got the funds at the minute.

My good problem is I own a 1080ti but I`m sure I`m not getting the most out of it.

Would buying the 3770k and overclocking to 5ghz be a worthy upgrade to help with gaming?

I game at 2160x1200 HTC vive

getting a 3770k to 5ghz is not that easy. Delidding will be a must and as well as getting a good one. IMO if youve got a good 2500k running at 5.0ghz you should keep it. Hyperthreading aside there were only a few % difference between sandy and ivy equal to about 200 mhz in speed difference and tbh even getting a 3770k to 4.8 would be a challenge

I had 2500k@5ghz gotten 3770k without delid u wont get anywhere near 3,6 and 5 ?? Dream on LOL

The general consensus here is correct. I'm in a similar situation with an i5 3570k. I debated an i7 3770k but then I'd be missing out on other features such as DDR4 and M.2 SSDs.

Right now what we both have should see us through summer to get a better lay of the land for the winter game releases.

Depends what you can get a 3770k for. If around £100 then go for it.

When i was looking i couldn't find one for much less than 200 quid, which a complete joke for a 5 year old cpu.

I bought a 6700k for 300 instead and coughed up the extra for new ram and mobo.

I thought about getting a 3770k to replace my 2500k but didn't see the point of buying into old tech when I could use that money towards a whole platform upgrade. Which is what I did.

Depends. If you're on z77 and run 2133mhz ram, 3770k could help with games that need more threads. I had a 2500k at 4.5ghz and BDO ran all my cores at 100%. Some games will like more threads.

If you don't see games stressing your CPU that much, just stick with what you have.

Edit: just noticed you have a 1080ti. You are CPU bottlenecked quite a bit. I would upgrade to 7700k for games. Or go with Ryzen if you don't mind lower gaming performance.
