So what's your take when a none M car has very good performance? Even surpassing previous m car performance?

It's still not a proper 'M' car. Simple as that.

Doesn't matter how it compares to previous generations - what does that have to do with where a vehicle sits in the manufacturers current range?

Distinct difference but often overlooked.

It should be limited so the M badge drivers can still feel superior. :rolleyes: I just believe that M and AMG . etc badges should stay on the performance cars of each range and not just be a trim level. Although I understand why manufacturers do it.

I'd personally say anything that BMW decide to call an M car, M3, M4 etc.

I did laugh when people said the FN2 is not a proper Type R.

Again you're using the term performance car which has been bandied about. Is a 340i not a performance car? It's very quick. Handles very well.

Exactly. So you could have an m car with worse performance than a none m. Just because they're trying to appeal to different market segments.

You're comparing across generations again. An 'M' car isn't an 'M' car just because of it's performance.

I get the appeal of having a sporty looking M Sport BMW. But it's not an 'M' car.

I'm not comparing across generations at all. Compare an m5 vs an m140i for example around a track.
 
Bog standard every day cars with massively loud aftermarket exhausts.

Stupidly loud exhausts are annoying full stop but when it's on a 1.0L Corsa it just winds me up a bit more.
 
To be fair you can get 'msport/amg' package on diesels direct from the manufacturer now. I do agree it's stupid though.

M/AMG/etc have their meaning devalued by such silliness.
 
I'm not comparing across generations at all. Compare an m5 vs an m140i for example around a track.

So do you struggle to tell the difference between an M4 and a 420d in M sport trim? Or do you worry that others may mistake your proper M car for a taxi or something?

Such a weird thing to get annoyed about..

Edit: But I totally take your point, horses for course and all that and it works for irritation too!

That makes me laugh at them because they've sacrificed torque to make it "more sporty" hehehe
