Do I need to stretch to a 1080TI?

Ah, phew ok.

Well if you're trying to take use of 100fps+ type performance for modern games, you're gonna want the best - which is a 1080Ti.

High end monitors are gonna take high end processors to power.

It's longevity I'm concerned about. Looking at the bargain basement 1080TI available from OCUK; OcUK GeForce GTX 1080Ti "Founders Edition" 11264MB GDDR5X PCI-Express Graphics Card £649.99 - think that's too bottom of the barrel? It's only £100 more than aftermarket 1080's, but not sure if I should be looking at the EVGA (etc.) cards for around £750 if going TI?

The money is there, but is the justification ;)

Yes.
1080-100fps
1080Ti-130-140fps

That can make all the difference in some games, especially in the future and the high and low fps ranges. If you can stretch to it then get one, seriously worth it.

Don't get a FE either way that's all i can say. Get a custom cooled card, far quieter and cooler.

Which 1080Ti you get isn't super important if you're just worried about performance. Aftermarket cards are going to run faster out-the-box, and cooler and quieter, but differences between those and the FE 1080Ti are going to be minimal in terms of performance if you manually overclock the FE a bit.

I've heard the cards can get hot, so aftermarket might be worth it if you want to ensure the cards never throttle.

They are, it's a founder edition; which has been advised to avoid.
There's nothing wrong with the FE if you don't overclock manually set the fan to 70% which is bearable and it'll keep temps within reason. I've got a FE does 2050mhz 12ghz on the memory set the fan to never go above 70 and keeps temps at 80 or below which is fine for this card

Certain places with very cheap prices should not be considered if you hope to have any decent support if things go wrong. I'd rather spend the extra £60 or so and have some peace of mind if I get a whiner or something.

Bearable fan noise is subjective of course but there have been several reports of 1080Ti FE owners saying the blower is hot and noisy.

No one can deny that the cooling performance is seriously poor when you consider the fan speed/noise it kicks out vs aftermarket coolers like the Aorus and Gaming X. They keep the GPU temps significantly lower while also having a lot less RPM on the fans.

Can't knock it for SLI setups/watercooling and headphone users though.
