Overwatch

I played about 10 games yesterday, after a terrible string of luck and losing a lot of them due to afk'ers (this is very common it seems in low ranked games?), I got down to as low as 1800! But after a few wins, climbed back up to 1900'ish. I need back on track and get above the 2200's again.

2497 just a week ago now I'm down to 1900! I dont want to be that guy who complains about his team mates but how are hanzo an widow viable as our main source of damage? Almost every game i enter we have a mediocre sniper on both defence an attack, by all means playing if you can aim but some of these are awful. Then you get the response "I'm practicing" i cant be the only person experiencing this.

My opinion on "practicing" heroes in comp has changed a bit lately... I used to maintain that you should exclusively use Quickplay to practice (not Competitive) but I've noticed that in general the game is completely different in Quickplay (in particular every single game seems to devolve to 2 teams of dps heroes scrambling around in a deathmatch with a guaranteed Widow on each team shooting everyone)...

So realistically the only proper "practice" for Competitive is - to play Competitive... There's a limit of course - if you have no idea at all how a hero's abilities even work then you probably ought to get that down in Quickplay but beyond that you've just got to try it out... I don't have a problem with it provided people are willing to switch (particularly if it ends up being a tough game)

Hanzo can be really good, but at the rank you are the likelihood is that he won't be. Widow can be really good, opening up on Kings Row for some early picks can be really good, but again at ~1900 meh probably can't hit a barn door with a cow's backside. My side got absolutely wrecked by a widow last night but the player was ranked 3750 and I'm just about clinging on the masters. Check their career profile, if they have <50% win rate on that hero try and pick something to carry with or at least maximise their chances to get a win. I find Zarya a good go-to carry if you have a rein for example. Rein can be agressive and not worry 'as' much about over extending.

But at the end of the day the advice in this thread is usually sound, if you lose 2 in a row or have a particularly bad salty loss then just take a break to refresh the player pool. Torb main on numbani attack won't swap? meh, make a cup of tea and have a biscuit. The thing not to do is auto tilt because of picks, that torb main might have a 65% win rate, in which case just let him do his thing. At the end of the day if you are good enough to climb and play enough matches, you will.

Thanks guys. I've noticed I tend to have periods of doing really well and then it all goes downhill. My playstyle does not change. Last season I hit 2800. I think a lot of it is who you get paired with.

Absolutely... won a match on Hanamura the other day (ranks around 2,700ish) with an attacking team consisting of Torb, Junkrat, Widow, Lucio, Dva and Ana (I was the Dva and Mrs.Rufus was Lucio)... really did not expect much but kept quiet in spawn and whaddya know! We absolutely wrecked them...

The problems usually come when that kind of comp doesn't work and people get real toxic real fast when you suggest any changes. Like a hanzo main who is constantly getting dived on by winston and genji, he will want YOU to take road/reaper to protect him rather than swap. Or the guy on winston with no support zarya who keeps jumping on a roadhog and dieing.

Try finding someone you like playing with to duo with. The game doesn't treat duo as an advantage as far as I know but 3+ groups it does. I climbed the most in a duo, it removes 20% of the randomness.

they need to fix the leavers situation - it's getting terrible now. 4 games yesterday and 3 leavers. People get so annoyed after a single round of best of 5 etc and leave. The penalty is not harsh enough to reduce the xp etc - need 24/48 hr bans etc. like CSGO for repeat offenders.

EDIT - right on que - another game -another leaver........ pathetic. End of the road for me until this is fixed.

I'm noticing no one picks the healers sub 2000! Mid way through the game, both our healers (well, support, a mercy and a sym) decided to go defense on an attack map. So I switched out to Lucio (was Mei, my main on some maps) and just about managed to keep the team going whilst we contested and took over the point! His new radius is something to certainly keep an eye on! And is it based on LOS now? I swear I wasn't able to heal people that I couldn't see. I don't normally play him too much so don't know his ins and outs.

Also, does his range go in all axis? Or just a cylinder like radius?

My understanding was he was always LOS, i didn't think there was a range before.

I've been on quite a good streak, up to a session high around 2280, with some new regular team mates (discord seems empty at the mo).

Still enjoy 3 on 3 probably more than comp as I often can carry as Soldier. Too often my teammates choose some pretty stupid characters, i either pick something silly too, or see if i can carry them and enjoy the challenge.

I haven't been playing at all recently :(

I haven't even done my placements yet on my main. I just get kinda annoyed while playing. Not necessarily with the game, but more because I only want to play Mccree but my aim sucks. I doubt I could even get diamond with how I'm playing now.

New to the game, so checking in here. Had fun playing Uprising, and found it an easy way to learn about some of the characters, but still some that I've not played at all yet. I'm at level 27, so just qualified for competitive, but not tried yet... concerned people take it too serious in there, but I assume I'll be teamed with similar levels, and I'm sure playing Mercy for a few rounds should make me more popular! I'm playing under uF0n #2333.

Also wondering if anyone is trying out Heroes of the Storm to get the D.Va and Genji skins... from reading the promo, seems you can't just jump in there alone, and need to link with friends... that right?

Yes, Competitive can be toxic - I usually just play my placement games, and then I spent a few weeks playing with the guys from here, but the Discord app was being really difficult - I had to uninstall it. Heaven help you if you don't want to play from a select group of characters that people like. My main character is Junkrat - I love him - but I get confronted every single time in Competitive - so now I don't bother.

As for Heroes of the Storm - yeah, you need to play games as a group - I'll add you when I get in if you'd like to get the skins (I can't remember my Blizzard ID, I just recently changed it).

I might have a peek in competitive, but I don't really care much for the "prestige"! That said, are there extra rewards for playing in competitive compared to not?

Regarding HotS, thanks, I appreciate that. I'm not online that often, but I'll check for a chance to team when I am (or my son might be online with my account)... guess I need to find some time over the next 3 weeks if I want the rewards!

I think you get some sprays or something. In all honesty, I don't think it's a particularly good ranking system anyway. I like how each team gets a chance to attack and defend, or the point captures are 5 turns, but the amount of whinging puts me off. You'll also encounter large amounts of nerd-rage :D

Gimme a shout if you see me and we can have a game if we're both available :)

I would say the main motivation to play in competitive more than anything is that it's where people play "properly" (or at least where people are meant to play properly anyway)... the game feels different - you typically won't have people playing a hero they are terrible as for practice purposes, or people just picking all DPS heroes and running around deathmatching instead of trying to win via the objectives... Not to say that "proper" games don't ever happen in Quickplay; they do sometimes, but if you want to experience the game for the proper team-based objective focused game it really is then Quickplay often feels like a letdown (in my opinion)

I'm Pooks#21702 - I'm having issues with Blizzard, so I can't add anyone.
