Average speed cameras - an insight

Certainly on motorways where there are cameras on several gantries along a stretch of road, they can link any two to make a section, and the average between those two will be the detection zone.

For example a ten mile stretch with gantries every mile and cameras on every gantry.

They could link cameras at mile one and mile ten, to measure average over whole ten miles.

They could link cameras at mile one and mile 2, then link mile 3 and mile 4, and so on to make 5 separate sections where each could send you separate ticket.

Or any combination of the ones between.

It is a lottery how they have it set up so best to just always obey the limit.

Ive heard something similar in that it could be cameras 1 and 6 so you never know. In response to above, whenever ive been in the 50 average roadworks i just stick to the left lane but i would say maybe 75% of cars and even trucks overtake me when im traveling at 50 by my speedo (works outs about 47 gps but theres more than a few mph in speed when some people go by). I do laugh out loud to see those types of people that fail to grasp how average works and they do 70 then brake for each camera.

The number of times I end up at 50 with someone right up my backside flashing/looking annoyed or flying past at 70 or something who I then leave standing as soon as we're out of the average check zone...

You do sound like the kind of people I see quite often, they bomb past me (I'm doing over 80) and jam on at the roadworks, doing an actual 45MPH (probably 50 indicated), assuming they aren't idiots who try to 'police' the outside lane, I sail past doing a GPS verified 54MPH (never triggered an average camera) and it takes them ages after the speed camera zone before they come by probably doing 90-95..

No matter though, I don't hog the outside lane in our out of roadworks, if people want to go faster I pull over and let them, I don't sit in the average zone 'policing' an indicated 50MPH which in some cars could be under 45MPH in actual terms..

I believed it was like the above ^^ :)

Never been done speeding though :D

No no, I normally max around 80-85, drift(ish) down to 50mph as I know they're coming up, stick the cruise at about 53 assuming thats probably still under 50 and then speed up promptly after the last camera which is often well before the NSL sign.

I've been up to 9 points in the past and have zero interest in being there again :)

My point was simply the people who do 70/75 like their eyes are closed and just carry on doing it straight through the restricted area like they're in some sort of rush for that specific spot.. I'd just love to know if they all got done because it would appear average speed check lights are the perfect way to catch pensioners etc.. basically the people who would never usually be caught but appear ignorant enough not to know what the cameras are..

Those of us who've had a dose of points can spot them a mile away and seem to behave exactly as the police would like ironically.

I mean I'd moan but make the whole network average check if you like, then I'd observe the speed limits 100% of the time lol.

on the motorway fairly regularly and I will race up to them at 85/90

Or am I surrounded by morons who are getting tickets because they can't follow a simple instruction

Only real reason I hate average speed cameras these days is because I don't have cruise lol. Was much easier setting that up for the zone. Worst average zone that's not too far from me is 20mph. It's actually quite funny seeing everyone drive that slow on a decent road.

Lol.. what are you getting at? :)

Wow 20.. never seen one of them, even 50 on a motorway, feels bloody dangerous lol! Like on the M25 with the variable limit, if you actually try and do 40mph some of the times it says 40mph you could end up dead in no time.. tricky as the last time I was caught (nearly 3 years ago) it was actually doing 70something in a 60 variable zone on the M25.. I didn't know those cameras even worked lol

That 20mph zone is thankfully not on a motorway. It's at London bridge. Most of the roads I drive around me are 20mph with speed cameras poping up everywhere which is getting really annoying and tiresome.

Probably the irony that you're slamming people for not following a simple instruction yet completely failing to follow the simple instruction of the speed limit.

Oh get over yourself.. you do 70 on the motorway? You know exactly what I was getting at.

I don't see much point in speeding on the motorway, I stick to 75 indicated, regularly see people flying past me only for me to catch up with them at a junction later on or when there's traffic.

^ That.

Stick cruise on showing 70mph on sat nav, and away we go.

I get where I want to be in plenty of time every trip, and arrive in a calm stress free manner.

That's nothing.

My girlfriend asked why we were going uphill when we were heading south.

Let that sink in.

She's ridiculously clever, but just occasionally, comes out with these gems.

If you speed on the motorway you can get to places faster.

I'm just pointing out the facts. ChrisD said that it was pointless to speed on the motorway because you won't get there any faster. Simple mathematics will tell you this isn't true.

You can argue about how much faster you'll arrive, and whether the juice is worth the squeeze - but you'll almost certainly arrive at your destination faster.
