problem is we pushed for uni to be the thing to do.

now we have the situation where peopel are needing a degree for a simple office job, unlike sweden and how it used to be here where a degree was to enter you into a career/feild.

putting that genie back into the bottle is going to be the deciding factor not if its free or not.

yeah this.

unless we change peoples perceptions of degrees and why to get them, then free tuition is never going to work as literally everyone will do one simply because they can.
The way its done in germany (and the scandinavian countries) is great, but the british don't have the same attitudes to make it work, not atm anyway.

Taxing private school fee's will force a lot of parents to withdraw their children and send them to state school. Increasing taxes on salary over 80k will encourage people to put more into their pensions or work less. Not sure this has been thought through...

Exactly, why burden the school system further when it's already been creaking under the weight of immigrant children in the last few years? Labour truly are idiots.

It's a never ending circle of **** ideas followed by idiotic fixes. I'm so tired of listening to their half-beaked ideas and infant thinking. They're just a bunch of brain damaged left-wing uni students that never grew up.

But then we have a shortage of skilled people as not enough are qualifying in the UK so we have to have immigration...............which a large portion of this country doesnt want. If you want to drop the numbers coming in we need to invest in training and teacher uk people.

Why not use both. I'm a Tory but def not against skilled immigration.

This country highlights a skill shortage? Bring in skilled people from abroad (maybe on 2/3/5 year visas) and use them as a stop-gap. During this time Universities are free for people studying subjects that will help them get jobs in these areas.

I totally agree. Will take a bit longer than a few years though but with a proper plan you can aim for tens of thousands of immigrants in 20 years or so. You are the exception though about not wanting some really low meaningless immigration figure. The people have spoken, after 20 years years of been fired up by the Express, Sun and DM and Farage and people wont except anything less than practically no immigration. Take back control meant close the borders to a lot of people.

This is broadly the current standard of left wing debate though, if they even debate at all, typically it's just dismissing your opponents views and calling them Nazi's.

I didnt. I stated it used to be very right ring and extremely racist. That is a fact easily proven by a quick google if you are interested. It isnt anymore. Don't put words into my mouth

Well it did used to have threads like "why do Pakis smell" and that was some of the tamer threads. I only used to come here for technical stuff and stayed out of GD in those days.
Indeed. A friend of mine noticed I was a member here and said "Isn't that place knows as the IT department of the BNP?". I explained it's a little different around here now.

Actually, I know at least a few members of OCUK used to be members of Stormfront as well, and they weren't ashamed to admit it.

Some idiot here thought i was a member of the BNP, after hounding him for days for proof he backed down. That's the standard of debate from the left. Label first without evidence then regret later

Why not just raise tax to 100% and then let the state provide everything? Everyone would receive the same and there would be no inequality. If anyone disagree's then they're heartless Tory fascists who are also enthusiastic racists. Also, why not stop voting altogether as we don't want the nasty Tories or Brexit, just let Jeremy Corbyn run the country as he's a really nice man who the Murdoch media portray viciously as a muddle headed communist.

Seems to be a popular way of thinking on this thread.

Oh look, exactly the same accusation can be levelled in reverse

Poor debating is not the preserve of any political alignment

now now lets not get silly.

My big issue is that there is nothing in between. I like some of Corbyns ideas like free university places (although not all, just the courses we need as a country), privatizing the railways to a degree like the one that is publicly owned but the service is farmed out to the private sector. I also quite like his idea having a state energy company to offer an alternative.

I do think corporation tax rates have gone too low and need tweaking back up a notch or two although not as far back up as it used to be. I honestly think tax rates need increasing slightly overall.

I think the company pay cap ratio is a great idea but maybe 20:1 might be a bit too low. 50:1 wouldnt be a bad place to start it bearing in mind there are companies out there where the ratio is 220:1 and increasing every year.

On the other hand I hate the triple lock pension and how Labour stands on that and I dont trust Labour to run the country financially and would rather have the Tories doing that. Again, they tories have gone why too far the other direction.

I would really love PR and having them all having to agree on some policies. It takes the sharp edge off stuff.

Time and time again its become obvious that public run companies are black holes for money because they don't employ the best people, don't pay competitive salaries for the expertise they need and as a result they are really poorly run. You want to have a nationalised rail and power system that becomes a bloated mess that you will ultimately pay for through your taxes? Thats fine.

When there is no drive to prioritise profit and efficiency bad things happen. There is a good reason capitalist countries economies far outstrip those that are far more state run.

Like China?
