Stockton

Stockton is **** as is most of teesside. Yarm is nice enough, but don't know what it costs to live there. Plus it's full of ponces. What kind of things do you like to do for hobbies/social etc.

The only place I would consider within Stockton would be Norton - But not all parts of it. Some of it is OK. The high street has had a lot of improvement over the years.

But yeah, Yarm would be a good place to consider, or Sadberge. Maybe also check out Hartburn - quite nice there.

Was brought up in Norton on Crooksbarn. Crooksbarn or Glebe are you best bets in Norton.

I agree with BDEE, when I don't reside in Perthshire which is only 6 weeks of the year, Norton is home. It's quite a nice area in comparison to elsewhere.

Stockton is pretty dire. Some of the surrounding villages are nice though. I've lived in Sedgefield for 10+ years and it's a great area. If you need any info about the region, let me know.

I am currently based in Stockton - to give you some context I have previously lived in Lincoln, London, Leeds, Newcastle, Bedford and Northampton.

I honestly do not understand the amount of negativity about Stockton in this thread... While it may have its better and worse areas it is certainly no more of 'a dump' than any of the places listed above and I was actaully quite surprised at how nice the city centre is for a small market town in the north. Indeed, it even won 'high street of the year' in 2016 and actaully the council seems to spend quite a lot of money on events such as a river festival, christmas celebrations and it's well know fire work display on bonfire night. It has a rich heritage in terms of steam engines and circus performances which are evident throughout the city and provides quite a lot of character attractions to discover. You are obviously quite close to the beautiful north york moors which is great for walking trips, as well as a plethora of costal attractions to the east should you fancy a scenic drive. The walk along the river from Stockton to Middlesbrough is also a nice venture and the 'Tees Barrage' has a number of activities and watersport based clubs etc along with being a pretty nice place to just walk around. While Stockton is far from being a 'big city' you are well served by the decently equiped 'Teesside retail park' and failing that you are just over an hours drive to either Leeds or Newcastle.

In terms of places to live... As mentioned Wynyard is certainly unique but perhaps not for every one (even if you can afford it), Norton and Fairfield are decent and Ingleby Barwick provides you with very large 4+ bedroom houses in very nice developments for comparively low prices... While I would avoid Stockton centre on a friday and saturday night if you are looking for sophistication there are a few more discerning places (micro pubs, live jazz etc) should you take the time to hunt them down.

Really appreciate all the input, thank you.

I have a budget of £800 /month, which looks like it should get a decent property in most places, especially Ingleby Barwick, Norton and Fairfield. I'm not a Fri night guy any more so as long as I won't get stabbed on a walk to the shop, I'm happy

Having lived in Selby, York & Manchester, I can say Stockton is like Selby, some of it looks like a dump but to be honest it's not any worse than most places, the people up there seem to have more conversation, there seems to be odd characters in the town and an issue with immigration there, I'd certainly not choose it over anywhere I've lived, actually it might be on par with Selby, they're the same sort of towns really.

The good thing is prices are low, 800 quid a month I bet you could be lord of the manor up there!

To be honest if you've got a job up there you could actually live in York and commute up there with the budget, the train fares are surprisingly cheap compares to equivalent distanced journeys.

My girlfriends is actually from slap bang in the middle of Stockton so is quite the expert lol, where about are you going to be working?

I've drove through Stockton once.
What a dump.

Redcar's cheap to live, but Stockton takes that one step further. The Keepmoat new builds for example, ours was 99500 for our 2 bed terrace, at the stockton site it's ~90K and infact a three bed end of terrace is at that 100K price point.

It's crazy cheap to buy here it seems!

Luckily I'm quite boring - I'd rather go away for a weekend than local stuff, and new job won't give me a huge amount of social time anyway!

We were looking at Sedgefield, looks like a lovely place - just no properties to rent there!

There's usually plenty of houses for rent in Ingleby Barwick at reasonable rates, although houses tend to be really crammed in together, its quite a nice place to live. I rented there about 5 years ago while saving to buy, we got a decent sized 2 bed detached house for 500 pcm

Great Ayton/Nunthorpe/Stokesley although nice they'd be more expensive and a bit of a chore for commuting, you'd hit a couple of traffic hotspots on the way.

Hartburn is quite nice.

I'd avoid Norton, our friend rented an apartment on the high street, I understand that some of the streets close are a bit rough.

Try Bishop Middleham. It's only a couple of mins drive from Sedgefield. Nice place as well, but smaller.

on the plus side if your heart packs in james cook hospital probably has the best heart unit in the UK.
