The Indoor Riding/ Zwift/ TrainerRoad etc. Thread

Hahaha, I hope you're doing it in more clothes than I usually end up on my cooldown! I tend to strip (soaked) jersey until cool, quick wipe with towel and then put a dry layer on.

Totally forgot to throw my last Turbo session up - Zwift GCN 'Sweetspot with steeps'. I'd tried to make it online for a KISS race but was running a few minutes late and missed it. As I was fighting off the end of some illness I dropped FTP for the session down to 250W so my intervals were at 325W & 100rpm with the recoveries at 225W and 80rpm.

Found it manageable and wondered if it was a little too easy (FTP is 270W normally) but once at the 8th/9th interval it was really hard, I was barely clearing lactate between intervals as I'm not normally riding lower than 90rpm. The intervals were meant to be 110rpm but I hadn't got that kinda leg speed after the first couple. Tough session, even at the lower FTP but I think mostly due to it being exactly what I need to train.

Triathlon relay in May, so I've taken to jumping off the turbo before the warm down (of Sufferfest videos) and running round the back lawn a bit to simulate heading into transition. Thankfully we're not overlooked, so the neighbours won't be wondering WTF I'm up to!
Oooh now you've got me thinking. Won't be doing it anytime soon due to my knee but I turbo in our garage which is soon to be completely fenced off from prying eyes, but I've got a great long stretch of garden to simulate transition. I could even set up a paddling pool to simulate getting out of the water :D.

I just bought some bits, and my account has been topped up to the platinum...
So I guess I could grab a kickr for £770! I have a week to think about it.

They do listen it seems.

  • BETA: Power meter + Smart Trainer ERG mode. Zwift will make an attempt to control your ERG enabled smart trainer now even if you've paired a separate power meter. For best results it's recommended that both devices are calibrated beforehand. You can simply uncheck the "Use ERG mode" checkbox when selecting your workout for the old behavior.

Had a tough ride on saturday but as my legs felt fine on saturday afternoon, I resolved to up my mileage. I figured the best/easiest way was to get back into a turbo routine so I set things back up sunday morning and as I'd had a good breakfast I figured to jump back in the deep end by racing rather than just spinning around (didn't fancy intervals).

Jumped into the WBR 'flat 4 laps' with a mixture of riders (rather than the usual CAT splits). I went out hard, keeping pace with the CAT A guys but knew I couldn't sustain it, as I started to drop I stripped off the knee & arm warmers I was stupidly wearing! Had a chase back on and ended up with a group of 3 others, we worked well together holding away from the mostly CAT B group chasing until the last lap. 2 of us left at that stage, the CAT B group had split so we stuck with the 4-5 left who'd caught us. As the speed ramped up 4 miles before the finish I couldn't hold wheels and dropped back - rolling across the finish easily. Due to the pace of this group several of them got bumped up into CAT A (and then promptly disqualified as not wearing HRM's!), so looks like I actually classified as 2nd in CAT B (Whereas in reality I finished 4th/5th)! More than happy with that though! :D

I'd struggled outside I'd naturally assumed I'd be down on power when back on the turbo - was really surprised by the popup suggesting I update my FTP to 289W! :o

Anyone else got Zwift/Kickr issues?
I updated Zwift on Thursday last week and I was doing a session after updating it. During my 3min recoveries on workout mode (non ERG) the resistance on the Kickr kept changing completely at random spinning away easy at 140w. Every few seconds it would go insanely high resist before settling back, then increasing resistence for another few seconds before reverting back. No pattern, no reason, just completely all over the shop.

Finished my session and then I updated the Kickr firmware and done a spin down.

Friday evening I jumped on to do a session before my race the next day which again uses workout mode (non ERG), not even into any of the intervals this time, just spinning away straight away warming up and the resistance was jumping around all over the place as per above.
Done another spin down, no difference.
Unplugged Kickr and plugged back in. no difference.
Unplugged ANT from laptop and back in. no difference.
Temper tantrum and went outside to do session.....

I have 30mins AR tonight, going to reboot laptop, ensure Zwift update. Then do another spin down on the **** and see what the hell it does. Anyone had this drama before?

Not used Zwift for more than a brief session with the KickR since getting it and even then I've used the Elemnt to control it.

Try controlling the Kickr via the Wahoo training app and see if it is still erratic?

Benny, I had it connected and controlling via the Kickr app also, sorry, should have said that.

I think I might know what it is......
Due to it being warmer, I am in the kitchen with back door open and after 1500 the sun shines directly in where I am on the Kickr. It was totally fine last night just speaking to my Garmin and no Zwift involved, then the sunshine came out and was directly on the Kickr and it started doing it slightly..... Sunshine went behind a cloud and it was fine then 5 mins later when the sun came out it started it again.
Bonkers. But it might be me that is bonkers? I will confirm my theory, but at this point, I think it genuinely is the cause of poltergeist Kickr.

Sounds like it's just overheating? Seeing Benny's shed pics earlier in the year I don't think there's much chance of that...?

My Vortex does seem to make a little more noise in the warmer weather. It whines more, also the magnet clunks and ticks at lower speeds also seem worse. Can sound like a bag of bolts slowing down after a hard session.

Doh! Didn't you post a picture up a while back with a shed full of things and you were talking of clearing it out to use the turbo in there?

xdcx, if you're controlling it externally from Zwift then what influence would Zwift have on it?

It initially started right after a Zwift patch applied. Then the next day without Zwift and just connected to my 810 it was fine.
Then day after that again with Zwift, it had the problem. So that is why I was thinking Zwift before I noticed the potential direct sunlight possibility last night.

I see but if it Zwift was only ever running along side as a distraction displaying metrics from a different PowerMeter source I can't see a link where it might have any effect on the KickR? :)

Unless you've managed to pair it over both protocols but control it via one?

No you are right. Zwift is purely there as distraction and because it syncs the data to TP/Strava when complete. But due to it still being linked over ANT FEC as a "controllable trainer" I thought it might still be trying to do something or getting confused.
Either way, last night, kept the door shut with no direct sunlight on the Kickr and was using Zwift. Not a single glitch.....
Don't put your Kickr in direct sunlight!!

It's a great buy for the money (cheapest FE-C Smart trainer?) but considering the Vortex can be had for under £300 many places it's increased price point is less and less appealing. There was a rumour that the Flow wouldn't continue getting firmware updates but I don't know how true that is. Always thought the Vortex had been around longer?
