Car shopping weekend with the Mrs....

Is that bolster wear on the drivers side? If it is, seems like a reasonable amount for such a low-ish mileage car to me.

I questioned this and the garage said it's probably slight wear, it's still under warranty and shouldn't have done that so I'll be getting mini to sort it out.
It's 1 owner will full service history so unlikely to have had a mileage trim

cooper s is like what 190BHP and can hit over 200 with simple mods or even a pulley adjustment. JCW is 220+ BHP in a car which weighs nothing.

your average car has what 100-120 BHP and is usually heavier too. the mini has practically no boot and cramped back. your average car usually has a decent sized boot in comparison.

Pulley adjustment ? The last two generations are turbocharged, the current 2.0 L turbos are detuned from x28i BMWs and a remap takes them to just under 300bhp

cooper SD again has what 170 BHP which again in a car so small makes if pretty fast.

the normal cooper engines are also pretty fast enough for your normal driver with around 110-120 bhp for such a small car is good going. remember a tdi golf usually has around 120 bhp and is a much heavier car.
I was mainly referencing to the Cooper like Op linked to. I find 7.9 seconds to 60 very impressive from a 1.5 litre 140bhp car with only 160lb torque. When I had my Focus ST with 225bhp and had a little play with a guy in his Cooper there was nothing in it which I was surprised with given the ST has double the torque.
You refer to the Mini as being small like it's a tiny light car but it's not! They weigh nearly the same as your average Focus, Astra etc which makes there performance all the more impressive imo

I'd be less concerned about a mileage trim, mostly because the mileage is reasonable for its age already. I mean it is 2 years old, with about 18k per year.

But wear like that, in this small amount of miles suggests multiple short trips. At least in and out of the seat many times a day, sort of thing. Which wont be as good on the components if it is many short trips. But as you say, still under warranty, for now.

Yeh it's clearly had some lass (or dude) doing plenty of short trips getting in and out of the seat regularly
Or maybe even a girl with a jacket with some kind of studs or metal on it which has warn the seat
If we get the car we will try get a warranty claim in

i've not checked the actual weights but a mini hatch can weigh between 1100 and 1250kg depending on spec. the focus is 1200-1500kg.

so there is a 400kg difference potentially which isn't small at all. in fact it's around 40% more weight. so yes the mini is indeed a much smaller lighter car. the focus that weights 1200kg is most likely the one with the smallest engine a tiny ecoboost engine.

Fair point we could go on all day about various models etc but the new Astra, Focus and Leon etc are between 1200-1300kg with the little Turbo engines in which is not far off the Mini hatch but if you take into account the Mini Clubman that is over 1300kg! Which is actually quite heavy so it's more around a 100-200kg difference when comparing to the newer models

i thought we were comparing a focus st (big heavy engine in a decent sized car) with a mini cooper (small engine in a very small car, it has next to no boot and very little space in the back, not as small as an audi tt but it's only a bit bigger).

focus st is a bigger, heavier car with a bigger heavier engine. that is why a new lighter mini with 140 bhp which isn't amazing but when you have it in such a small light car it does make it move.

the mini one range is the one that is crap. the cooper and cooper d are fun and more than fast enough for your average person.

the cooper s, sd and JCW are the ones that have very good performance for enthusiasts. maybe not the SD so much but the cooper s and jcw certainly do. also we are discussing the hatch, not the estate, SUV, or other models here. the estate also looks absolutely vile. obviously the bigger mini's aren't as fast because they are much heavier.

anyway the point is a focus st isn't exactly light when compared to a mini and a mini cooper (if it has 140 hp, i thought they were 110hp but that was the older engine) is light and small so 140 hp would make it shift.

how much HP do motorbikes have for instance?

however if your the sort that drives a focus st, the cooper s is the one you want or the jcw. you also want to avoid their bigger cars from the range.

if you want to compare to cars of similar size and weight then you have to give those cars bhp. if the new mini cooper has 140 hp. then i'm sure those cars probably only have around 100 hp if they aren't as fast.

again stupid to compare them against the cooper S with it's 200 bhp. but a car that small with 200hp makes it fly. whereas in a focus with a big heavy engine it's just a fast car.
