Car scratched whilst unattended. Culprit fessed up...

I can't imagine the average person easily parting with £500 (if it is going to be in that region). I'd do everything I could to keep it off insurance even if that means just asking for a sizeable contribution to the repairs if she proved difficult. Easier to take some of the financial hit but not have the whole sodding thing on your record - then again I am risk averse when it comes to anything of this ilk.

Personally, I'd probably thank them for being honest, remove as much as the paint transfer as I could and not even bother getting it repaired.

This. We have the same, black gti and it's covered in scratches and key marks - people enjoy damaging it it seems. We just cba to sort them!

So someone shouldn't be able to keep their pride and joy in peak condition because of the recklessness of other drivers?

It's a fact of life to the majority a car is a tin can that gets you from A to B but it really upsets me some drivers seem to completely neglect the property of others. Even one of my old uni mates jokes about how he trashes his £400 shed around and has admitted to hitting other parked cars and just driving off. The guy can't drive to save his life but I just despair at his attitude. If there was a tangible insurance service that covered you (separately from normal insurance) for this sort of thing I'd happily shell out a premium to keep my 135 in perfect condition.

As others have said, that's only very minor damage and easily repaired for a relatively small cost. Just make sure she knows it's going to be in the region of £500 to sort as she may want to go through the insurance in that case (although advise her that it will increase her and your premiums, and the excess is probably half of the cost anyway).
If the OP were to have claimed against her and she didn't have her own car repaired, there would generally not be an excess to pay.

One of my neighbours caught some drunk immigrant kicking a car last night. Not sure of the whole story, but shortly after he did it there was some shouting and swearing (pretty loud, the whole street heard it) and him trying to deny it even though they blatantly saw him do it right in front of them.

The next I heard he was on the floor and groaning in pain, while someone else called an ambulance. So I'm guessing someone dished out some street justice lol. There was a cop car hanging around for a while afterwards, but obviously they were not called ;)

I don't advocate the dealing of damage to people's cars and whenever a scratch appears on mine I get annoyed, but ultimately they're a massive hunk of machinery that we park in places where other large pieces of machinery move about and are piloted by knuckle draggers so I've sadly accepted it.

the biggest issue i find is car parking these spaces are too small. then you have the idiots who will even though there are 3 spaces free right next to you. park right next to you then open their door right into yours.

i try and park far away from the shop where it's quiet but it's not always possible

Sorry my post is confusing - she would end up paying her excess which would be close to the cost of his repair anyway, without the extra premiums from claiming.

Even worse now - if a third party makes a claim against you, you generally do not have to pay an excess.

So if OP claimed against girl, girl has no excess to pay....

I think it is refreshing to see people being honest about damaging someone else's property.
Me too. I'd have been inclined to give the paint a buff to see if I could remove the scratches, and maybe pay for a replacement plastic part if I could find one reasonably priced for little effort.
