Finsbury Park Van Attack

As we are from the same "community" I should warn you that you are being baited by benneh and others are now picking up his slack to draw you in deeper.

Benneh wasn't baiting him, just using the situation to highlight the ridiculous stance of some people who expect the whole muslim 'community' to come out and apologise for the extremists by equating to this situation and the whole 'political right' community having to come out and apologise for this extremist.

Not that he was expecting him to.

attacker named as Darren Osborne - and weirdly (for a supremacist or whatever he is) he's also doing the ISIS/terrorist finger pointing in the air pose...

Are you suggesting they dont need protecting?

every law abiding citizen british born or foreign has the right to feel safe here. I fully back anyone who wishes to got to town on an actually convicted terrorist white black or asian but as said this is just more tit for tat hate crime attacking those innocently going about their day and these people need and deserve our protection

They think they need 'special' protection

Nah, it's more showing the ridiculous nature of the arguments being used by many on this forum. Many of those arguments could now be used against them in this thread.

The reality is there are a small number of extremists and they have more in common with each other (whether they be "right", "left", Islamist or any other) than others they claim to represent/hold similar views to. Many extremists flip and change between extremist ideologies, often polar opposite to their previous extremist view, the only commonality being their proclivity for the use of violence and anger against others.

The guardian readership / Hamas
Tim farron / Isis

They have a cross over of views what's your point?

Go on then, tell us what you think the crossover is. ;)

They think they need 'special' protection

Do they?

And even if they did then it's probably because this incident is the tip of the iceberg. The amount of hate and bile regurgitated against many Muslims and people that are assumed to be Muslim is pretty significant, emboldened by attacks from Islamists, speeches from people like Trump and Brexit.

It's not the Finsbury Park Mosque, it was reported as a building containing a mosque a few hundred metres away - I.e a mosque in Finsbury Park. Maybe that's changed?

Whether the Muslim Welfare House is associated or related to it I don't know though.

I live nearby and walk past where the attack happened everyday, so I can give you a well informed run down.

The Finsbury Park mosque is in St. Thomas Road; yes it is the same mosque that was quite controversial in the past, but that changed quite some time ago. It has already been the subject of attacks by anti-islamic types, you may remember it was actually national news when somebody tried to firebomb it. After that happened, they kept a police officer on duty outside, but I think that's since stopped.

The Muslim Welfare House is on Seven Sisters Road, around the corner from the Mosque, roughly 3-4 minutes walk away. It's right next to one of the entrances to Finsbury Park station and tends to be quite busy with a pretty narrow pavement given the amount of foot traffic. This is just before the railway bridge, so when you see the live news coverage on TV, they are reporting from the other side of the bridge, looking in that direction.

Where the attack actually happened is on a road called Whadcoat Street off of Seven Sisters Road, it's pretty much a tiny cul-de-sac with only room for three or four cars. This is still a minute or so walk from the Muslim Welfare House, as you have to cross a busy road. Over the past six months or so, I've noticed that a group of (mostly young) Muslim men gather in the early evening in this road, presumably after prayer. They are usually playing some kind of game on the street, I don't know what it's called though.

The attack happened at that particular spot, with witnesses describing how he left the bus lane and turned left into the road.... it's a very sharp turn, so I'm not sure it's something you could tackle at a particularly high speed, otherwise the van would likely be in the wall.

The attack actually happened closer to a Church than it did any Islam mosque or centre.

Has our government actually done anything concrete to try and prevent terror attacks since the last ones in London and Manchester? I can't help but feel if there was actually something other than endless platitudes being offered it would at least go some way to prevent incidents like this one.

I wonder what his experience in prison will be like? To some he will be a hero but obviously there is a community of muslims in prison too.

No one seems to have a clue what to do though sadly.

I guess cracking down on the internet would be one thing. Will give them years of being able to blame different companies for holding them back.

I can't imagine he'll be put in the standard prison. Surely they'll hide him away with extra protection.

Well what do you look for? Nearly everyone wears a backpack. The country also voted against Internet control.

Dealing with ones already known for nefarious activities is surely a good starting point? Inciting violence, downloading terrorist manuals, people coming back from war zones seems like perfectly reasonable measures to take given our situation.

Concrete blocks and soldiers are only useful for reacting to a situation rather than preventing one.

Ah yes, silly me. I was thinking it was why the youth vote came out to stop the Internet control. Hence the huge campaign on social media.
