Tower block fire - london

So sad what a terrifying way to die, your so close to safety but know you'll never make it if on upper floors. Lived in a tower block for 6 months once. Can imagine to a degree.

Saw a video on Facebook of a couple of guys who live there and they said a pal in the fire brigade said on one of the floors they were storing the bodies and there was around 150....

Truck load of salt needed

I just don't see why they'd lie about figures, what are they going to do? get rid of records of people who died and pretend they didn't exist? Even that wouldn't work due to family/friends/neighbours.

Do you not think sky news or one of the other outlets camped there might notice truck loads of salt being delivered? After prolonged temperatures of 1000 degrees Celsius you wouldn't need anything other than an ash bin.

Well this women seems to think there could be a lot more deaths. I suppose the Gov want to break the news as softly as possible

Supposedly many of the victims (or what remains of them) have been found in groups - this seems to have lead to some extrapolating those figures as though it uniformly covered the effected area (i.e. assuming dozens of people to each flat no one got out of) which probably isn't the case.

Probably release the figures slowly to minimise the risk of rioting?

As mentioned they slowly increase the numbers as opposed to one lump 200+.

Maybe, I dunno.

Don't they just release the confirmed deaths as bodies are found rather than speculate on the final toll, as everyone else wants to do

yup, though they did start to release the total figures for 'missing/presumed dead' in addition to those... perhaps to try and pacify some of the conspiraloons that was 50-something now 70-something and they've stated that the number could rise... I'm really not seeing where the cover up is - no one is denying that there are a lot of deaths from this - some numpties on the other hand got worked up over the figures for confirmed deaths...

and some other numpties beat up a volunteer in a suit thinking he was council worker... then wonder why the council workers aren't going to come downstairs just because an angry mob is outside

and of course various political types and random nutters have had a good old rant (some more coherent than others) in front of the world's media

so anyone else seen the "tory Councillor" the protestors beat up was in fact just a guy who'd been volunteering and helping out but happened to be wearing a suit :/

I sincerely hope my opinion and cynical thinking is wrong on all counts but I wouldn't be surprised if the number of people lost to this tragedy ends up being much higher than is being reported. It feels to me like there is a strategy at play to drip feed details in effort to quell public emotions and actions.

I also wouldn't be surprised if at some point this gets turned in to a story of sub-letting, benefit fraud, over-crowding, illegal immigrants, anti-social behavior and the under-class designed to outrage middle England. They are probably waiting for anger to subside before releasing the attack dogs of the gutter press!

Well there was an off duty police officer or was it ex that was talking via phone to either BBC or Sky News Thursday or Friday saying it'll likely be a lot higher than 100.

seems House of Cards (the original TV show) covered just this sort of thing, some striking parallels re: the monarchy and the press, social divide etc.. etc...

(warning contains mild swear word beginning with 'B')

Hopefully the demographic that might participate in a "day of rage protest" do not watch the BBC, and rather, as the media suggests, use social media;
but just caught the end of BBC1 Panorama, cashing in, cynically, with what appeared to be an unbalanced/non-objective analysis of Grenfell causes.

It seems disrespectful to be producing such programs, and premature, until any preliminary results from public enquiry.

A government announcement of further fund cutting to BBC and re-direction of monies into building standards or activities to avoid Grenfell reccurence seems appropriate.

Despite legal Representatives of victims in similar circumstances suggesting a government lead public enquiry would not serve the victims as well as an inquest, you appear to favour diverting funds away from a media outlet not owned by an immigrant billionaire and allowing the government to lead, is that about right?

A lot of chancers jumping on the bandwagon I think with this day of rage. Who's to blame for the lack of sprinkers and lack of fire proof material, not really the Gov, more the local Gov if anything, architects etc.

or the management company the council set up... or perhaps sprinklers aren't the issue per say but lack of fire breaks or fire doors etc.. not to mention the cladding - that might be a contractor or the council or web.. who knows until they've properly investigated

In the same way that the public appreciate other privately owned media feeds (Murdoch etc) have their own agenda,
privatisation of elements of the BBC would remove the golden aura of impartiality that the beloved BBC brand seems to attract.
Trump has already tried to discredit the BBC, but I am not sure any of that mud stuck.
