What watch do you wear?

You are raising discussions that have been repeat ad nauseum for years, and you suddenly think it is worth discussing as though it is something new and unique? Newsflash: it has been argues to death by people more intelligent and knowledgeable than us and doesn't need to be repeated again. It really is pointless and simply detracts from the for the most part positive discussions and advice-giving we have had so far in the thread.

welcome to conversation?

its an art/jewellery thread. just like we where disusing it may as well be the "what bracelet you war" thread.

but please dont **** on about quality or engineering when you know both claims are truly false.

no engineer would conceive of a mechanical watch in this day and age, only a jeweler would.

maybe this should just be rolled into your fashion thread if that's how you feel?

I have a similar dress watch, in that it has day/date, moonphase, gmt. It's the Longines master collection retrograde moonphase and i think it is a perfect dress watch. I may be a little biased though as it was a wedding day gift from my wife.

Yeah I have seen that one too and it was on sale once for a very nice price. However 44mm is too big and the dial a little too busy for me. :)

At last managed to pick up a Speedsonic. Love it.

tbh it was an interesting side conversation before rich got all upset.
Interesting to those who've not seen that waffle before. It's just generic guff about what makes X something, but not Y. Can be applied to almost every item that is purchaseable. Not interesting, and I'm glad it's been shut down.

the problem with a forum being there's always people who ahvenbt had the conversation yet...

Well, after randomly suggesting it to someone else, I am now pretty in love with the Oris Artelier Complication and am considering it as my dress watch. Such a fantastic and harmonious design, beautiful even, with all of the complications that I personally find useful (date, moonphase, GMT dial). Low 38 hour power reserve but meh, not a deal breaker.

I would say it looks better than pretty much anything have seen up to £6/7k, and can be had for around £1'250 with leather and £1'350 with metal bracelets. Grey market even cheaper. If anyone can suggest similar watches that look better from respected Swiss manufacturers then I would love to see them! :)
Impressive complications for the price. How thick is it? Can't find that figure on their spec sheet

Hmm, sites seem to quote between 10 and 12mm https://www.google.ch/search?q=oris...q=oris+artelier+complication+casethickness+mm

Roughly the same thickness as a Longines Hydroconquest, I think. It 'should' fit under a slim short cuff, but I may go and try one in a local store to find out and post a photo here.

Tefal, it was a completely redundant and subjective conversation that could go on endlessly. Lets just let it die.

i think that's unfair he has a point.

intrinsic use in this case would be accurate chronological function. which these watches fail on compared top cheaper electronic sources.

the only standard they can be judged on is jewelry/artistic merit.

as engineering/accuracy wise they all fail abysmally compared to a cheaper electronic stet up.

£10 jeans from ASDA last longer, feel more comfortable and look "just about" the same as Levis ... Its all relative

I guess I can recognise signature pieces as being "art", that is pieces made to special commission, one off items etc.

Just beyond that I don't get. Once outside of that bracket for me they just fall into utilitarian (eg cheap, accessible, hard wearing) or cosmetic.

Anyway that's my 2c. Was looking for a nice watch at some point for purely cosmetic reasons, to set off a suit or two.

Nice looking watch, quite interesting that the insides are apparently based on the Bulova Accutron design, especially when you realise that Bulova, like Omega also had a 'Moon' watch, on Apollo 15. Apparently Commander Dave Scott was wearing an Omega, but the glass popped out prior to his second lunar surface walk - he used his Bulova backup instead - this watch was his own private property unlike the Government purchased Omegas. The Bulova apparently sold for $1.62 Million at auction!

Interesting read about your the Speedsonic can be found at

And next to my 007

As it has been in a box I am not able to check the lume yet. It is a similar weight to the 007, but does feel more substantial. Changing the length of the bracelet strap will be fun with the amount of tiny screws it takes, but I will have to remove a couple of links before I can wear it. The silicon strap looks much easier to resize as it is ridged in that area and has the same buckle as the bracelet.

Very nice. A quick 10 second flash of the LED torch/flash on the back of your phone will sort the lume right out.
