Are gay folks getting too much attention?

Yes I think it's borderline getting over the top to be honest. But, I think that's the same for all this politically correct stuff. Every advert has to have every minority under the sun in it, as does every TV programme etc. Just move on with it and ignore it is my recommendation. To be fair I don't know a single gay person who watches these kinds of programs, most of them are all generalised crap at severe ends of the spectrum of madness, there was a BBC 'Documentary' that seemed to just be provoking homophobes, not my scene at all :p

Frankly I couldn't give a ****. You could be gay, straight, 3 degrees bent, florescent orange for all I care, it just doesnt bother me, I really dont care how you identify. As such I dont get the whole "lets celebrate we are XYZ"... seems like an attention grab more than anything.

They need a month? Jesus, just how great does everyone think they are? Is a day not good enough these days?

My personal favourite is the inclusive family, you know the ones, Dad is Chinese, Mum is African and the kid is white.

So cute.

Yes yes they're best! Sadly some people within the LGBTQIRFXYS (it's got quite ridiculous) arena just seem to like to make a big deal out of it, I don't get it. Sure I get that being homosexual was very much frowned upon to the degree people died and still do because of it. But dancing through streets, I just don't get how it helps anyway, I'm checking out of this thread because it boggled my mind.

I don't see why it matters, it isn't like it is harming anyone - maybe the odd high street is closed for a parade or something but it isn't like everyone is forced/coerced into wearing a rainbow badge or have a minute long silence for all those lost to AIDS etc.. (well at least not yet anyway)

if people want to be extra 'proud' of their sexuality for a whole month each year then that's up to them tbh...

At least we seem to be getting past the hilarious antics of people like Louis Spence and Alan Carr who are like the black minstrels of the gay world like OMG THEY ARE SO CAMP IT'S HILARIOUS.

I thought Louie Spence had his fifteen minutes of fame, but then he turned up on the Crystal Maze reboot last week!

Are the TV stations going too far with this? Why do they have to single people out like this, as if they need special attention?

Because pandering to whatever group identity and advocacy ideology is dominant in any given time and place is profitable. Which groups are fashionable changes, but the basic idea of group identity and advocacy sadly doesn't and businesses gain money and goodwill from pandering to it (especially if they jump on the right bandwagon early enough) unless the fashion changes quickly. If that happens, businesses that pandered to the previously fashionable group identity and advocacy suddenly become "prejudiced" and villified.

Same old same old.

You're talking in terms of bona fide equality, in which people aren't singled out for special attention because they fit the currently fashionable group identity and people are treated as people rather than as a group identity. That's not the dominant way of thinking and as far as I know never has been. I wish it was.

How about if people want to be proud of being "white", have streets closed for their white pride parades during white pride month, etc? It's the same thing - why should it be treated differently?

I'm "qualified" for both and I'd rather spit on everyone in them than have either exist let alone take part in them. I don't give a damn how fashionable irrational prejudice is or which equally pathetic variant of it is fashionable in any given time or place.

Well I'm not sure there is an issue in itself with being proud of who you are. The issue that could well occur with a 'white pride' event is attracting racists/far right guy groups who could hijack such an event.

The point of these LGB[whatever] events was that they were discriminated against. That has changed in recent years but perhaps there still is some discrimination. You might not like such an event but that shouldn't matter, you don't need to attend one - if others want to attend one that is surely up to them.

Well I'm not sure there is an issue in itself with being proud of who you are.

There's an issue in the belief that who a person is is defined by a single biological characteristic. There's another issue in the belief that being in the "right" biological group is something to be proud of, i.e. that it's better than others.

The point of these LGB[whatever] events was that they were discriminated against.

Obviously not. The point of group pride is to be proud of being in that group and to promote the two beliefs I refer to above.

The promotion of biological group identity, pride and advocacy affects everyone sooner or later unless it fails completely (which is the opposite of what's happening in this case).

Well that is a bit different, if someone is claiming to be better than others that is a separate argument to someone expressing pride in themselves when they're looked at as less than others in an attempt to be seen as equal.

Obviously not. The point of group pride is to be proud of being in that group and to promote the two beliefs I refer to above.

that doesn't seem to be the case, it seems to be mostly motivated by wanting to take a stance against discrimination etc..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_pride
Gay pride or LGBT pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBT rights movements throughout the world. Pride has lent its name to LGBT-themed organizations, institutes, foundations, book titles, periodicals and even a cable TV station and the Pride Library.

This is something that's been bothering me for a while. I have many gay friends, gay family and my mentality is that what people do in their personal lives is none of my business, so put the torches and pitch forks away.

That said, I just saw an ad for some or other gay tv show. This is nothing new, homosexuality has been in films and tv shows for decades and there's nothing wrong with that.

This show however, "gay and proud of it" or something almost seems condescending, patronizing towards homosexuality, like it's an affliction or something. It was in the same line as those TV shows that document people with Downs Syndrome, quite pathetic really.

Are the TV stations going too far with this? Why do they have to single people out like this, as if they need special attention?

I know if I was a gay man I'd be seriously miffed.

Unless I'm just being a , in that case, as you were.

Stop watching live television then.

There are a hell of a lot of gay people who base thier whole lives and careers around thier sexuality.

Whether it's a case of it being something they fought so hard for that it's now such a big part of them or just being the camp gay one is low hanging fruit is a toss up though.

Gay (by gay i usually mean camp Masculine gays tend not to be able to market it) is a big selling point in a lot of public things
