I have just got my son a 20 litre Coldwater Aquarium for his birthday and are looking for suggestions for some small colourful fish.

I don't believe there are any coldwater species suitable for only 20L, that is absolutely tiny, if you get a heater, you could get snails and shrimps, keeping the water chemistry perfect will probably require a lot of plants though as spikes in ammonia, nitrite etc will be far more likely in only 20L.

Honestly, just get a bigger tank if you want to keep fish.

White Cloud Mountain minnows. Should get about 4-5 in a tank like that. Shouldn't grow any bigger than an inch and a half.

I think basically this is your only choice!

In your shoes I'd grab a low power heater (shouldn't cost you more than £15) and stick a Betta in there.

More importantly, before you do anything, read up on the nitrogen cycle and how to prep your tank before putting any fish in.

Also head over to GD and check out the big fish thread in there :)
