Has anyone ever used Aqua Decor for 3d backgrounds? they look incredible (instagram and their site) I got a quote for my Fluval, 100cm by 50cm, with 3 fake rocks to go with it and got a quote for £273 . Would love to know their technique on how they make them but I guess they keep that hidden for good reason :D.

I was tempted by something similar but couldn't justify loosing that amount of volume let alone the cost! went for the jewel ones in the end and as good as they look i wouldnt bother again given the chance as i imagine in a few years they will start to looks quite tatty.

People have made some pretty awesome backgrounds on the facebook fish pages if you have the talent :D

Yeah I have been looking up some inspiration, many home made ones are less to be desired imo, I used to use a similar technique back in my teens and made some model rocks/cliff forms for a project, they turned out pretty good. I am thinking I could do just as good. However I think its all in the texture, AquaDecor must have a mold of each one and spray/pour the mold in to get such good consistency. I will check out other brands but I've yet to be impressed as much aquadecor.

Tonight I asked for a quote for just the background and it was £213, I'd rather wait till and get one for that bigger tank I am wanting to get eventually :D.

Chaps,

I have a 22L nano tank, with a single male Betta, 3x Oto's keeping it clean and 3x Assassin snails doing a fine job of keeping it snail free. I've recently moved the tank to the other side of the room on a new stand I built and re-planted it with a few Amazon Swords, upgraded the heater and replaced the filter with a new, smaller one. If I'm honest, I think the tank now looks great!

I came back from 3 days away from work to find a thin, clear film had formed over the top of the water. All the water parameters seem fine (though it is due a water change tomorrow) with a small NO3 reading of somewhere between 0-10 on my JBL strips. The rest of the water parameters are what I would call normal from the 2 months the tank has been running (low PH soft water, typical Edinburgh tap water but great for a Betta).

What could be causing this film? Should I be worried?

Secondly, my new filter sounds like an old hard drive arm moving around loading something big, that sort of grinding stepper motor sound. I'm sure it wasn't like this when I got it, what could cause such noise?

The noise will be the impeller, make sure it is seated correctly.

The film on the top builds up if there is nothing breaking the water surface. Try angling your filter output a bit higher.

There's a fair amount of surface movement, I've got the spray bar hitting the back wall at full chat to give low flow for my Betta but enough surface movement to get the O2 needed for the Oto's. Before this I had it turned all the way down and never got the film. I'll do a water change tomorrow and see if it gets rid of it.

Thanks for the advice on the pump too, I'll strip it down and re-seat it all tomorrow. It's a frustrating noise but I'm impressed with the output of such a small pump. Admittedly it's a 50L filter on a 22L tank, bit OTT...

film is quite normal in planted tanks, i have lots of plants and i get film so i use a floating skimmer

Thanks Unicorn. I did a water change and after 20hrs or so I can faintly see it. I did have some horrible hairy-too-fast-growing plant in there which I replaced for some Amazon Swords, perhaps it's the old plants that didn't have such issues.

Still can't get this pump quiet though, perhaps I'll look into a different brand.

Big question though, I'm using liquid CO2 right now, how would I go about putting a pressurised system in for "low cost"? I know Fluval make a kit for tanks my size but I'm lead to believe the CO2 cartridges last for a matter of a day or two. Any easy method to get my greens looking greener?

If your doing the CO2 thing your much better off buying a 6KG bottle and a regulator. It's cheaper in the long run by a long way but the upfront costs are a bit prohibitive.

Looking at changing my tank up finally - going to go for about a 250 - 300L tropical jobbie - what filters do people use and recommend. Theres a big part of me that wants to go for an external one but need to do some more reading up.

Got up this morning and when feeding our fish I noticed one of the poor buggers had got stuck and died.
I fished him out with my net and disposed of him, however should I do a large water flush due to him dying?

It would only have got wedged if it was weak from being sick. Either way looks like its un diesesed unless you can see any spots or fur on it then id leave the tank be
My neons do silly stuff like this all the time. But as said they can just be dumb and get stuck and die or be ill and do it. Id do 10% change and be done with it
